This year is the first time to bring the finals of “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” English Writing Contest online. This year’s contest consists of two competition components, i.e., narrative writing and argumentative writing. In the component of narrative writing, contestants were required to build on the background of Journey to the West, one of the four great classical novels of China, and give full play to their imagination in writing a sequel or creating a new story. Its purpose is to examine the contestants’ descriptive writing and creative thinking, while integrating ideological elements to help them deeply think about and perceive Chinese classical literature culture. In the component of argumentative writing, contestants were required to use argumentative materials to discuss the question: whether we can predict and change future. The purpose is to inspire contestants to bear in mind the big picture, broaden horizon, engage in rational analysis and dialectical thinking, address challenges and look to the future. Such innovative and relevant theme demonstrates the spirit of modern youth who constantly challenge themselves and pursue self-upgrade.

Since its inception in 2013, “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” English Writing Contest has established a platform for college students to show and improve their critical thinking, creativity and intercultural communicative competence. It has been included in the “National Innovative Talent Training and Discipline Competition Ranking” released by the Chinese Higher Education Association of the Ministry of Education. HUTB’s excellent performance in this year’s contest shows the education and teaching level of the faculty of the School ofForeign Languages and the comprehensive quality development of its students.
