On November8, the School of Finance of HUTB held a meeting on exchange of experience in developing finance into a national first-class major at Conference Room B601 of the Economic Management Complex. This meeting was aimed to further promote the advancement of the finance major, HUTB’s characteristic and dominant subject selected into the first batch of construction projects for the national first-class undergraduate majors in 2019. Nine members of the Finance Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, namely, Professor Jiang Yongmu from Sichuan University, Professor Ma Ji from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Professor Li Yanxi from Dalian University of Technology, Professor Qiu Dongyang from Chongqing University of Technology, Professor Song Qinghua from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, Professor Chen Rongda from Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics, Professor Peng Diyun from Nanchang University, Professor Jiang Hai from Jinan University, and Professor Jin Jingyu from Chongqing Technology and Business University, were invited to attend the meeting online. On behalf of the School, Dean Liu Saihong first sincerely thanked the experts for their full support. Luo Changqing, Director of the Department of Finance of the School, reported the School’s work on developing finance into a first-class major of finance from the four aspects: development foundation, existing problems, development thoughts and plans.

On how to further make the finance major certificated as a national first-class one, the experts at the meeting analyzed the specific problems and gave relevant suggestions. During the exchange, the experts fully affirmed the fruitful results HUTB has made in scientific research, classroom teaching, discipline construction, teacher training and other aspects regarding the finance major since it was selected among the first batch of construction projects for national first-class undergraduate majors. In the meantime, these experts provided constructive opinions on future development direction. For instance, Professor Jiang Yongmu raised three questions on how to develop the finance major: first, the coordination between the majors of finance, financial engineering, and financial technology; second, the open-ended combination between superior majors; third, talent education. Professor Ma Ji stressed the need to highlight the feature and course construction of the finance major. According to Professor Li Yanxi’s suggestions, intensified efforts should be made to refine major features around the three key words of “Hunan Province”, “Belt and Road Initiative” and “Domestic and International Circulation Paradigm”; greater efforts should be made to apply for more first-class courses, like experimental practice courses and virtual simulation courses; and efforts should be made to strengthen the international integration and communication for the finance discipline. Professor Qiu Dongyang pointed out that in developing the finance major, HUTB should integrate the elements of financial technology to underline the feature of virtual-real combination. Professor Song Qinghua held that HUTB should stick to the path of characteristic development and handle the relationship between general and specialized education. Basing on that, a three-year plan should be formulated, Song added. Professor Chen Rongda emphasized that in developing the finance major, HUTB should implement the thought of new liberal arts, put the talent training quality first, and maintain an open and international vision. Professor Peng Diyun noted that more systematic, targeted and innovative work should be done to develop the finance major. Professor Jiang Hai pointed out that efforts should be done to strengthen teaching and practice and put the talent training model into effect. Professor Jin Jingyu suggested that intensified efforts shouldbe made to refine major features, implement and refine the first-class major development plans, and cooperate with enterprises on course construction.

Dean Liu Saihong and Professor Ouyang Zisheng once again thanked the experts for their analysis and suggestions, saying that HUTB wouldfully take the experts’ guiding opinions and play its advantage to develop the finance major. Theyadded that HUTB wouldrefine major features, strengthen the construction of faculty and systems of courses and teaching materials, and implement the mode of virtual-real combination and the targeted talent training plan, in a bid to lay a solid foundation for further making finance the national first-class major.
