Xiaoxiang Morning Herald, Xiangtan - A teacher, a student and a student parent jointly acted as hosts to unveil the nameplate of the new college. On October 26, Xiangtan Institute of Technology located in the National Economic and Technological Development Zone of Xiangtan held the inauguration ceremony and the opening ceremony for its undergraduate class of 2024, starting its new journey in such a unique way. The idea to have a teacher, a student and a student parent unveil the nameplate demonstrates this college’s social and public welfare concept in school running. Xiangtan Institute of Technology is Hunan’s first regular private non-profit undergraduate educational institute transformed from an independent college with the approval by the Ministry of Education. The CPC Xiangtan Municipal Committee, the Xiangtan Municipal Government, and the Department of Education of Hunan Province have specially sent congratulatory letters to the college and expressed that they will continue supporting the college’s reform and development. Chen Xiaohong, HUTB President and CAE Academician, and Professor Ledere, President of Fourtwagen University in Germany, respectively sent video congratulations to the college. They expected the college to adhere to its motto of “Integrating Knowledge and Action to Strive for Excellence” and to strengthen both domestic and international cooperation for the common goal of cultivating a large number of first-class R&D and management talents. The Institute of Market Economy of the Development Research Center of the State Council, the Commerce Economy Associationof China, and many universities in and outside Hunan Province sent congratulatory letters to wish Xiangtan Institute of Technology to develop into an internationally renowned high-level applied university as early as possible.

Unlike the inauguration of other universities, Xiangtan Institute of Technology has a teacher, a student, and a student parent act as hosts to unveil its nameplate. That has demonstrated the college’s public welfare concept in school running. According to Yuan Libin, President of the college, when planning the inauguration, Li Shufu, Chairman of Geely Group, pointed out that this college belonged to the society, teachers, students and parents. Especially, when a student enters Xiangtan Institute of Technology, his entire life and family are connected with this college. The organizers are just builders of such platform. Thus, a teacher, a student and a student parent are arranged to inaugurate this college.

For this reason, in early October, Xiangtan Institute of Technology elaborately organized online and offline questionnaire surveys themed at “Our Institute of Technology” among student parents to collect their opinions, suggestions, and expectations on student growth and school development. During this activity, a total of 1219 valid answer sheets were received. Through selection, 18 parents were awarded “admission tickets” to the college’s inauguration ceremony and the opening ceremony for the undergraduate class of 2024. Eventually, through lot drawing, Chen Guoxiang, the father of Chen Dongxu, a student coming from Liling, Zhuzhou, Hunan and majoring in Business English in the Humanities Department, won the opportunity to unveil the nameplate of the college.

Transformed from Beijin College of HUTB, Xiangtan Institute of Technology is the result of hard work of Beijin College’s leaders, teachers and students over the past years. For thisreason, the Institute specially invited Professor Liu Guoquan, Professor Zhang Guihua, Professor Mo Xiangyi and Professor Chen Weidong to attend the ceremony on behalf of the senior teachers of Beijin College.

Professor Liu Siwei, Director of the Academic Committee of Xiangtan Institute of Technology, former first-class honorary professor and doctoral supervisor of HUTB, and Sun Zhiwei, Chairman of the Student Union of the Institute and an accounting majorof the Department of Management enrolled in 2019, unveiled the nameplate on behalf of teachers and students, respectively.

With a planed area of 1,200 mu, Xiangtan Institute of Technology has developed 29 undergraduate majors under seven disciplines, including science, engineering, economics, management, law, literature, and art, and enrolled over 6,000 students. The Institute recruits students from 16 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions) across the country. Xiangtan Institute of Technology is Hunan’s first regular private non-profit undergraduate educational institute transformed from an independent college with the approval by the Ministry of Education. In 2018, to solve the remaining problems of independent colleges and promote the development of higher education in Hunan, under the support of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and the Hunan Provincial Government, Geely Group and Hunan University of Commerce (HNUC) cooperated on establishing the Beijin College of HUNC. In 2019, Beijing College started relevant transformation work in accordance with the transformation requirements of the Ministry of Education for independent colleges. Under the strong support from the CPC Xiangtan Municipal Committee, the Xiangtan Municipal Government, and Hunan Provincial Department of Education, and with one-year hard work, Beijin College strictly followed each standard of the Ministry of Education on establishment of higher education institutions to actively promote the transformation work. Finally, the college passed the inspection and acceptance by the Ministry of Education. On June 30, 2020, the Ministry of Education officially issued a document to approve the transformation of Beijin College of HUTB into Xiangtan Institute of Technology. Thus, Beijin College marked the first case and a benchmark for independent college transformation in Hunan.

“This college is positioned to be a first-class applied university, with new engineering and new business as its two pillars.” According to Yuan Libin, this college will focus on the cutting-edge industries and technologies to lay out majors around Hunan’s social and economic development; this college will rely on new engineering and new business to make achievements in the industrial Internet, Internet of Things, big data and other fields. He urged that college is the most precious time in one’s life. Facing an uncertain future and world, it is crucial to work hard to foster survival and development skills in the school days. He raised three expectations for classmates. First, to love the Party and the country with gratitude for the times and with lofty ambitions and ideals; He noted that college students should look to the future, study for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, and seek no quick success or instant benefits. Second, college students should learn and do as much as they can. College students should spend 70% of their time within campus and 30% of their time in experience the society; college students should regard hardships as opportunities and setbacks as wealth. Third, college students should “integrate knowledge and action to strive for excellence” No matter how extensive knowledge one has, his lack of action only leads to empty talks. Success is not only about completing difficult missions, but also about doing small things excellently.
