Speaker’s Profile:
Han Shaogong, born in Changsha, Hunan Province in 1953 with ancestral home in Li County, isa famous writer. He used to be a member of the Standing Committee of the First and Second Hainan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, a deputy of the Third Provincial People's Congress, thechairman of the Third Hainan Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circle and a party member and secretary of the Writers Association of the Provincial Federation of Literaryand Art Circle. He stepped down from above posts in 2011. He is currently a member of the Presidium of the Chinese Writers Association, a member of the National Committee and honorary chairman of Hainan Provincial Federation of Literaryand Art Circle, and chair professor of Xiaoxiang Scholar of Hunan Normal University
He won the National Outstanding Short Story Award in 1980 and 1981; the "Order of Arts and Letters (Ordre des Arts et des Lettres)" issued by French Ministry of Culture in 2002; "Outstanding Writer Award" of the 5thChinese Literature Media Award in 2007; the 4thLu Xun Literature Prize; the second Newman Prize for Chinese Literature in the United States. His literary works have been published overseas in more than 30 foreign languages. In addition, he has published several translations such asThe Unbearable Lightness of Being(by Kundera) and The Book of Disquiet(Pessoa).
