[Special Topic of Volunteer Activities for the Country People] Practice Team Investigated the Water Quality Safety

On Aug. 6, it was a sunny day. The "Kuanmian Dawan" practice team formed by students from Hunan University of Technology and Business, carried out a field survey on the water quality safety in rural areas.
Laodao River, a first-class tributary of Xiangjiang River, is known as "the second largest inland river in Changsha City". Located in Changsha City, Hunan Province, it originates from Zhouluo Village, Shegang Town at the north foot of Shizhu Peak, Liuyang City, flows through Shegang Town, Longfu township, Shashi Town, Beisheng town and Yong'an Town of Liuyang City, Chunhua Town and Huanghua Town of Changsha County. Laodao River Town, Kaifu District flows into Xiangjiang River from Beiyang oil pool, Changsha City. The total length is 141 km, and the drainage area is 2,543 km2.
This year is the third year for the implementation of "river chief system" in Kaifu District of Changsha, and the Laodao River has achieved initial results. The team members talked with the fishermen along the river and learned that they paid different attention to the water quality safety in rural areas. Meanwhile, the team members publicized the importance of water quality safety to them. When leaving, the members took samples of the river water, briefly inspected them, and planned to send the samples to the water quality testing institution for professional testing together with the following survey samples.
The team members subsequently came to Baixi Village, Chunhua Town, Changsha County, and contacted Secretary Zhang of the local Village Branch by telephone, indicating the purpose of the visit. Secretary Zhang expressed great support for their research. The team members initially understood the basic situation of the local topography and reservoir distribution, as well as the number of local residents and the general living conditions through the communication, and learned that the local water quality management method was the group responsibility system, which was led by the group leader. The rivers and reservoirs were managed in different regions. Secretary Zhang warmly received them and personally drove them to the war preparedness reservoir for investigation. He introduced the local geographical environment, the main water intake methods of local people, and water sources, etc. in detail.
Baixi Village is adjacent to Dongjing Village, which are located between hills. The terrain is relatively gentle. Two villages share the war preparedness reservoir, surrounded by green mountains. The soil is porous. Most villagers use well water because tap water is not available in the village.
The team members visited some local farmers, asked them to fill in a questionnaire about water quality, and learned about the local water source, water intake methods and local people's views on water quality safety.
Villagers said that almost each family has a well. Because the tap water has not been available in the village, domestic water was from the well of the household. He mentioned that in the previous years, the water quality was polluted because several villagers raised pigs in the village, but the government took timely measures to manage it, and the water quality has improved in recent years. The villagers affirmed and supported the water quality improvement of the local government and were optimistic about the local water quality.
