Professor Zuo Hanzhong Introduces Nianhua Art in HUC

Themed on “Landscape of life on New Year Culture”, Professor Zuo Hanzhong, expert of Chinese folk arts, systematically introduced wood engraving New Year Painting(Nianhua) and Hunan Tantou Nianhua in Design Institute of the Arts of Hunan University of Commerce(HUC).

Zuo Hanzhong is currently the editor of Hunan Arts Press, visiting professor of graduate school of Chinese National Academy of Arts, member of Chinese Artists Association, vice director of folk art professional committee of Chinese Arts and Crafts Institute. He was also the former editor of the journals "Hunan folk art collection", "Chinese folk arts series", "folk arts—— unique skills series" etc.

In this lecture, Zuo shared his deep affection with Nianhua, and systematically explained the origin and formation, prosperity and distribution, development, evolution and aesthetic values of Chinese woodblock Nianhua with the audience. He also made a detail interpretation of the basic characteristic of Hunan Longhui Tantou Nianhua and its links to Nianhua in other places.

Zuo conveyed that Chinese woodblock Nianhua has a long history for over one thousand years which has been touted as "TV of the farmers in ancient China". Nianhua is very popular among the people as the epitome of our national spirit. Zuo insisted that Chinese woodblock Nianhua features on its superior materials, shaping skills and aesthetic quality which should be sample images for discreetly study of contemporary artists, while the craftsmanship of folk artisans is worthy for college students to learn and inherit.

“Professor Zuo is a living textbook of Chinese Nianhua," dean of Design Institute of the Arts Li Lifang said, he has illuminated not only the long history of Chinese Nianhua to us but also profound meanings of folk arts which lead to the esteem of traditional Chinese culture by teachers and students from deep inside.
