What does Girls’ Day mean? Does it mean showing deep emotion of “I love you”, hanging slogans like “XXX, you are my goddess”, shopping to one’s heart’s content, or going on a trip on impulse?
Students in Class 1301 and Class 1401 in Department of Convention and Exhibition Economics and Management, School of Tourism Management, Hunan University of Commerce spent a special Girls’Day on March 7 by holding a painting and calligraphy exhibition for Xie Bingying, a leader of modern women. According to Wang Peiliang, director of the department and postgraduate supervisor, such activity on such special day is not only an innovative teaching practice but also a meaningful patriotic education as students have to choose the topic and make exact plans under the guidance of the teacher. For students in Class 1301 and Class 1401, this is the best gift on Girls’Day.
A Special Girls' Day? Encountering Modern New Women Xie Bingying
March 7 is Girls’ Day, an annual festival for college girls,.
On the playground of Faculty Cafeteria, Hunan University of Commerce in west part of Changsha, there gather a lot of people as a special Girls’ Day was spent here. The three characters of "Xie Bingying" becomes the focus. Reporters learn on the spot that a memorial exhibition of the famous modern women's leader Xie Bingying’s life and works is held here. There are 26 photos about 110 centimeters high and 70 centimeters wide which record modern new female Xie Bingying life’s experiences and related works and compose two Chinese character of "Nv Sheng"(equal to “girl” in English), providing a unique cultural view of the campus.
Why Such an Activity on the Special Day?
The adviser Wang Peiliang, also the director as well as a professor and postgraduate supervisor in Department of Convention and Exhibition Economics and Management, School of Tourism Management, Hunan University of Commerce, has his special consideration.
In 2015, professor guided students to Tai Wan to take part in Convention and Exhibition Marketing Competition for International Universities where he happened to join the memorial activity of Xie Bingying. As a country fellow of Xie, Wang quckily contacted National Taiwan Normal University and collected many relevant materials. As soon as he went back to Changsha, professor Wang contacted Foreign Affairs Office of Lengshuijiang City as soon as possible and communicated with students in class about his idea. And that was the origin of the special activity.
According to the journalist, Xie Bingying’s hometown is Duoshan County, Lenfshuijiang City, Hunan Province. She became famous for the writing, Army Diary in 1927. And French writer Romain Rolland wrote to her to show respect and congratulations, claiming that she was “a new woman with struggling spirits”.
In 1938, Xie Bingying worked at the frontline of Xuzhou and Hangzhou War Zone as a secretary of the headquarters in the 5th division. Because of such background, Xie was able to collect lots of vivid information so that she became one of the most active and impressive writer at that time and was highly thought of by social celebrities such as Tian Han, He Xiangning and Huang Yanpei, etc. In 1948, she worked in Taiwan Normal University as a teacher and emmigrated to America in 1974. In her life process, Xie has altogether published 365 masterpieces of more than 80 kinds with 20 million characters. She is regarded as the grandmother of “Female Soldier” literature in Chinese new literature history.
According to Wang Peiliang, inheriting culture and promoting and interaction between the production, study and research innovation, is the original intention of this special Girls’ Day.
Teaching in Practicing? An Attempt to Integrate Ideals, Emotions and Educational Reforms
“Xie Bingying’s life was full of legendary stories as she had been to Japan for study twice and escaped marriage three times. She is a pioneer of China’s national revolution and woman’s liberation movement; she is also a leader for Chinese modern new women.” as the director as well as a postgraduate supervisor in Department of Convention and Exhibition Economics and Management, School of Tourism Management in Hunan University of Commerce, Wang Peiliang said as this year was the 110th anniversary of the birth of Xie Bingying, hosting an exhibition to commemorate her life on Girls’ Day could stimulate female students to learn from Xie Bingying to be self-independent and self-improved, to enrich their inner side, to be well cultivated and create their splendid life constantly.
Wang Peiliang said, this activity got support and guidance of Wang Hanqing, general secretary of the Party Branch in Hunan University of Commerce and Foreign Affairs Office in Lengshuijiang City, and help from some enterprises such as Tongyuantang, Hualv, Shijiefeng, Bingshanmingren, Chaiweiyu, etc. He thought hosting this activity was also an attempt to reinforce interaction between the school and enterprises, to combine cultural inheritance with convention and exhibition economy in an in-depth way and to creatively cultivate talents for convention and exhibition industry.
Kuang Jinming, a student from Class 1301, said she took part in the whole process of this activity from discussions to concrete implementation, from which she had a deeper understanding of connotation and denotation of convention and exhibition. As to how to arrange an exhibition, how to choose a topic, what to do at an exact time and how to implant marketing, she also had a better idea. “By walking into the goddess of Xie Bingying’ life, and knowing modern women’s great achievements as well as their unknown aspects, my schoolmates and I are encouraged and motivated .”
