If you picked up ten thousand RMB, what would you do? Kept it quietly, donated it to charity, or returned to the owner? This February, ZHANG Siyu, sophomore of Art and Design College in Hunan University of Commerce, faced such a choice. On February 15, ZHANG Siyu arrived at a café near Xingsha early as usual for work-study. When cleaning, ZHANG Siyu moved seats and saw a stack of money, not a bunch of garbage.

ZHANG Siyu gave the money to the front desk, and soon, the owner Mr. Ma contacted the front desk to retrieve the money. It turned out that Mr. Ma carelessly lost ten thousand RMB when transferring project funds at the café the night before last. “I came the next day without any hope. It is not expected that the girl who picked up the money returned it. A few days ago, my family’s cell phone was stolen by the thief. The contrast of these two things shocked me. I intended to pay her, but she refused. As a result, I decided to send her a pennant to promote uprightness.”On the afternoon of March 10th, Hunan University of Commerce commended ZHANG Siyu’s behavior, and awarded her with the pennant, “Returning lost money, Lofty immortality”, sent by the owner, to encourage ZHANG Siyu’s behavior and call on students to learn to her.

When the reporter asked her whether she was tempted, ZHANG Siyu admitted that “People always get tempted. Anyway, ten thousand RMB is more than one-year’s tuition for me. My mother doesn’t have work. My father relies on odd jobs to live, not very stable. Younger brother is still at school. It is a lie to say that I was not tempted.  But I eventually returned the money to the owner. My father taught me, from an early age, to be honest. This time he praised me for doing the right thing. The owner will come back searching. He must be very worried.”

After picking up the money, returning the money and refusing the money, ZHANG Siyu admitted: “Some people say that I am stupid. Why don’t you keep it? Before this experience, I’m not sure what I would choose. But when you see how happy the owner is the moment he finds it. Then rethink the worry if you kept it. You will know what the right thing to do is. Next time when I picked up the money, I would return it again.”
