“Three points” for updating employment service

With over 2, 000 graduates every year, Hunan University of Commerce invites over 1000 enterprises to the university, thus offering 7.6 positions per graduate. Employment rate is kept above 94% over the years. As a local university, Hunan University of Commerce goes with the surprising employment rate.

 “Advanced planning, lofty positioning, and more flexible support”, the president CHEN Xiaohong said. This university tries to resolve difficult employment situations with “Three points”. It has already got preliminary results.

Shaping students, Motivating Students

WANG Guancheng was a headache of his families for running irrelevant business. As a student majoring in Hotel Management entering Hunan University of Commerce in 2008, he was single-minded on ships and naval vessels. It is not expected that he really went to a yacht club upon graduation and had outstanding performance.

 “Counter-attack” of WANG Guancheng was attributed to the guidance of his major teacher, XING Yanchao. Yacht "fever" of this student brought XING Yanchao, committed to tourism management teaching, an idea that why not combine his hobby with career planning, since management of the yacht industry has just started and employment prospects are positive.

With the instruction of XING Yanchao, WANG Guancheng finished a series of researches centered on yacht industry, including social survey, professional survey, academic papers and graduation thesis. With deep accumulation of "yacht experts", he became the first graduate employed in the yacht industry of this university.

In recent years, Hunan University of Commerce put forward advanced career planning strategies, centered on “forward-looking vision, advanced platform, front roles”. Career planning is promoted into three-dimensional, personalized and dynamic strategy, with great efforts to achieve highly effective and broad docking between comprehensive ability of graduates and social employment requirements.

To set up “forward-looking vision,” namely, to establish training mode under “comprehensive commercial discipline”, and build up students’ competitiveness by enhancing their business quality and ability, so as to satisfy requirements of different industries and enterprises; “Advanced platform” moves employment education from senior to freshman period, from employment class to professional class, from employment teachers to major teachers; “Front role” brings students to realistic competitive atmosphere of workplace at school by true simulation and internships, etc.

“We need more flexible and effective career planning, not only shaping students, but also motivating students”, vice President PENG Jinqing said.

Adapting to markets, creating markets

YAN Qiang, from Chongqing, gave up family business in his hometown after graduation and chose to stay in Changsha and be a “farmer”. In May 2014, YAN Qiang and several classmates launched Changsha Ruiteng Agriculture Co., Ltd. Six months later, the company’s green agricultural products became the new table favorites of Changsha citizens. It has already absorbed more than 200 member families to cultivate corps and vegetables for them and its turnover reached up to more than 500,000.

YAN Qiang also got the idea from class. Constantly emerging food safety incidents brought him an idea—could he improve operating ways to achieve seamless connection from fields to table for green healthy and safe food? Under the guidance of professional teachers, he rented land of 50 acres in the northern suburb of Changsha City, and attracted cooperation from friends in Hunan Agricultural University, Hunan University of Science and Technology. They established “Little Field” ecological farm. “This is a capacity saturated era. Young people should catch up from behind, not just follow the market. We must learn to walk in front of the market.” YAN Qiang said.

Hunan University of Commerce greatly supports graduates to start their own business. The University sets up Education and Steering Committee on Students Entrepreneurship and included entrepreneurship education courses into personnel training program through such courses as “Basics of University Students Entrepreneurship” and “Entrepreneurship and Practice”, etc. Over the past three years, over 4, 000 students received entrepreneurship education and training. The school also established University Students Entrepreneurship Fund, Entrepreneurship Incubator Bases, etc., providing free various well-equipped venues. Currently, there are more than 20 enterprises and projects established to get funded.

Supporting the disadvantaged, Cultivating the advantaged

“My dear teacher, I was promoted to be team leader!”This is the most satisfying Spring Festival blessing message to YUAN Lu, counselor of the Law College.

The message was from a girl named XIONG Huanhuan, who is working in a law firm in Changsha. Generally, it takes six months for fresh graduates to become full member and two years to be team leader. But Huanhuan only took six months to complete.

It is hard to imagine that this confident and capable workplace lucky girl dared not to see people. “I have a black birthmark, spreading to the entire left cheek, which also have long hair.”It’s more worrying that XIONG Huanhuan’s parents divorced and she just lived with elderly and sick grandparents without fixed income.

The university had given special care to this timid and poor girl: the school arranged Party Member Dormitory for her upon entrance, helped her find work-study jobs; also contacted a public hospital to remove the birthmark on her face; in the practice season, the school recommended her to do internships in the People's Court of Yuelu District and Bureau of Justice of Yuelu District.

Over the past four years, XIONG Huanhuan became optimistic and cheerful, just like another person. She has won the National First-class Scholarship, National Motivational Scholarship and Second-class Prize of English Speech Contest.

“Employment is not only helping to provide jobs, but also delivering warmth, hope and positive energy.”Party Secretary, Wang Hanqing, told reporters. Students with difficulty in employment are sensitive emotionally. School pays more attention to all-round support in the psychology, spiritual status and developing ability. Take a more flexible way, and integrate affirmation and realization of personal value with employment helping. (CHAO Jinwen, Report LI Lun’e)
