XIONG Mingrui, from Yiyang City, transformed himself from chief of Public Security Bureau into “Master of Root Carving in China”. Now, he is a visiting professor of Hunan University of Commerce and the curator of “Buduo Gallery”, in which over 100 pieces of root carving artwork exhibiting are created by him.

On the afternoon of May 25th, the reporter visited “Buduo Gallery”. It was opened on May 23th, 2015. Over the past few days, visitors came in an endless stream. Over 400 visitors came each day, even professional root carving artists and collector from Beijing, Shanghai, Fujian and Guangdong. It is said that MA Siji, president of China Root Carving Association, observed closely each piece, and said that all the exhibitions are precious, smart in material, shape and art, even rare nationwide. He complimented Hunan root carving to be in the top list throughout the country.

Diverse carving artworks are displayed in the huge hall. Some is court lady in long dress, some is metal tripod taller than man, some is tiger bouldering, some is cobra, etc. Each piece is lifelike, carved according its natural shape. XIONG Mingrui told the reporter that this is the second largest large-scale professional root carving gallery in China and the largest in Hunan.

Root calligraphy is the specialty of “Buduo Gallery”. Name of the gallery, “Bu Duo Tang”, three Chinese characters are all root carving works. Such Chinese charaters as “Fu”, “Shou”, “Hu”, “Zhongguomeng”, etc. are stretching on the wall; some are cursive scripts, some running scripts, some official scripts, showing strong Chinese favors and traditional culture. XIONG Mingrui said that he had won the highest award of Chinese root carving art “Root Carving Craft Gold Award” twice, and the works for the award were both root calligraphy. The piece on the east wall of the exhibition hall is one of these two. It is 3 meters in height and1.5 meters in width. With a far look, it is combination of cursive script and running script, strong and solid, and the characters are just like painting. With a close look, roots are mixing with each other, embracing little stones. Some small roots are grey and even white, which are actually shrub roots. All of these characteristics reveal respect to nature and ecology.

Over 20 buried wood carvings are another specialty of “Buduo Gallery”. XIONG Mingrui introduced that these materials are carbonized under water for more than ten thousands of years. The reporter noticed that some art work had already been carbon, lying in the air like flowing clouds. Two pieces of buried wood carving are black Mermaids, 3 tons in weight and 5 meters in height, thin in the upper and thick in the lower, 1.5 meters in diameter of waist. Broad and large bottom of the carving is decorated with waves, and the top is carved as beauty head with long hair. Branches reach upward, just like Mermaids’ tails, vivid and impressive.

XIONG Mingrui is now 53 years old with 30-year public security service, and he was ex-chief of Public Security Bureau in Yuanjiang City.

Why did a chief of Public Security Bureau become obsessed with root carving, and even could not extricate himself? XIONG Mingrui said that it was an accident for him to be fascinated by root carving and it dated back to his trip to Beijing with unbelievable shock on a root carving exhibition. “Every root carving is unique. Tree roots in the mountain are spirits absorbing essence of the earth for tens and thousands of years. It is agonizing to see their rotting after abandoned by human. Turning the rotten to the rare is the same as eradicating criminals and saving the people.”

Over the past 10 years, XIONG Mingrui spent almost all his spare time on searching tree root with diverse shapes and creating at home. He always stayed up late and forgot eating to buy a desirable tree root. When his friends found his obsession, they gave him such a nick name as “tree root”. The exhibition name in Buduo Gallery, “Art Exhibition of Tree Root”, was attributed to this.

 “Carvings in Buduo Gallery are just part of my works. I didn’t count the number of my works. I also have a gallery in Yiyang Arts and Crafts Vocational College. My house in Yiyang is actually a gallery. The total could be more than a thousand, including those I sent or sold to others.” XIONG Mingrui said, there are thousands of roots waiting for carving. All the savings of my family are spent on it. The largest confusion is investment, because only investment without incomes makes everything difficult to sustain. He told the reporter that he will open root carving galleries in Beijing and Shanghai, and then make traveling exhibitions nationwide when time is ripe.

In order to carry out creating wholeheartedly, XIONG Mingrui has gone through a formal retirement procedures recently. Retiring from the public security front, he has begun his second life in career because of his hobbies.
