[Lushan Lecture] Major General Tan Yuejin of NUDT Gives Lecture in HUTB

On the afternoon of September 15, Major General Tan Yuejin of National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) was invited to give the 111th Lushan Lecture on "How to Write a High-quality Project Proposal to NSFC"at Yingcai Lecture Hall, Library. The lecture was chaired by Vice President Yi Mianyang, attended by of teachers and students of HUTB.



Combined with his rich experience in NSFC project proposal and review, Major General Tan Yuejin, started from the discipline and department adjustments of NSFC, expounded on the fundingorientation and key points of deepening reform, analysis of applications since 2016, common problems in application process, and matters needing attention and cases. In particular, he emphasized the 32-word (Chinese characters) funding orientation: (i) funding creative and timely ideas to achieve excellence in science; (ii) focusing on the frontiers of science in unique ways to lead the cutting edges; (iii) supporting application-driven basic research to enable breakthroughs; and (iv) encouraging transdisciplinary leading-edge research to promote convergence.

 

Tan listed 27 common problems in the application process, explained them in details, then summarized 15 do's and don'ts and analyzed them through case study. The lecture was a real stuff that contains both summary of experience and vision of the future, both generaloverview and specific cases, both major principles and small details.

 

Major General Tan Yuejin, professor of College of Systems Engineering, NUDT, doctoralsupervisor in Management Science and Engineering, leader of the national-level teaching team for "Systems Engineering and Management" courses, vice chairman of Society of Management Science and Engineering of China, executive director of Chinese Academy of Management, vice chairman of Teaching Steering Committee of Management Science and Engineering Specialty in Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education, specialist of CMC Equipment Development Department, member of Military Logistics Expert Group, etc. He has been long engaged in the teaching and scientific research in systems engineering, network big data, equipment system engineering, equipment engineering management, satellite-based mission planning, etc.; presided over 1 major and 1 key NSFC project respectively, more than 10 national defense pre-research projects and 6 model research projects; and published more than 150 academic papers, of which more than 70 were indexed by SCI.
