2021 Costume Design Competition of Hunan College Students Undertaken by HUTB

On June 11, the final of 2021 Costume Design Competition of Hunan College Students, sponsored by Department of Education of Hunan Province, undertaken by HUTB, co-organized by Hunan Design Artists Association and supported by Hunan Packaging Magazine, was held in the Costume Design Experimental Center and Creative Workshop of HUTB, and attended by Chen Xiaohong, Party Secretary and CAE Academician, Zhang Lin, second-level researcher of Higher Education Department of Department of Education of Hunan Province, Vice President Zhang Ling, leader Li Dingjun, Ma Jiancheng, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of Hunan Design Artists Association, Chen Qiuwei, Party Branch Secretary, Chen Ming, member of Party Committee and Minister of Publicity Department and other leaders, Wu Yuqing, editor-in-chief of Hunan Packagingmagazine, as well as the heads of enterprises such as Zhilianchanrong Technology Service Co., Ltd, WONBLY, PALETTE, Soffice, La Nova, teachers and students of participating colleges, as well as the heads of functional departments of HUTB, team members, and representatives of teachers and students of School of Art & Design. Five well-known experts in domestic Costume Design circles served as final judges, including Professor Li Chaode and Professor Li Zheng of Soochow University, Professor Hou Dongyu of Hebei University of Science and Technology, Professor Li Haibing of Hubei Academy of Fine Arts, Ye Tianyi, Vice President of Circulation Branch of China National Textile & Apparel Council and Executive President of Hunan Garment Association, and four experts served as supervisors including Professor Chen Geng of Hunan Normal University, Professor Liu Weidong of Changsha University of Science and Technology, Professor Wang Tianming of Hunan University of Technology and Professor Li Lifang of HUTB. A total of 322 entries from 13 universities in the province were received in the semi-finals of this competition. After evaluation, 109 design works of clothing accessories and 116 design works of ready-to-wear clothing were finally shortlisted. The finals are divided into two tracks: clothing accessories and ready-to-wear clothing, which were held in the form of static exhibitions and fashion shows, bringing a visual feast of beauty, fashion trends and innovation to the audience.

Chen Xiaohong, Party Secretary and CAE Academician, delivered a speech on behalf of HUTB at the final of clothing design. She said that educating people for the Party and cultivating talents for the country are the mission of education. In recent years, the consensus has been reached that the art education shall be strengthened, and helping college students improve their artistic accomplishment and shape their aesthetic spirit is the only way to cultivate new people of the times. She pointed out that HUTB implements the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, organically integrates aesthetic education into the cultivation of innovative, entrepreneurial, applied and compound talents, devotes itself to creating the HUTB of humanity and art, constantly enriches the cultural life in campus, strives to form a positive, noble and elegant atmosphere for educating people, and guides students to set great ambitions, understand great virtues, become great talents and undertake the great responsibilities. It is under the guidance of this idea that the School of Art & Design of HUTB has embarked on a distinctive road of artistic education development with the educational effect significantly enhanced. She put forward three hopes for the development of Costume Design education: first, strengthen the cultural self-confidence, confidently inherit the Chinese excellent traditional culture, and constantly create new glory of Chinese fashion culture; second adhere to the scientific and technological innovation, empower the clothing industry with technology, and light up the fashion life with wisdom; third, promote the combination of production, education and research, and inject new vitality into the development of clothing industry and fashion industry in Hunan and even the whole country.

Subsequently, the fashion show officially kicked off, and the models dressed in various costumes full of creative and aesthetic elements went up on the stage one by one. The costumes were of the modern fashion, fairy tales and dreams, or Chinese style, or pastoral style, or national characteristics, or sci-fi colors, or eco-environmental protection, or martial arts style. The scene is colorful, and the passion keeps rising with the dynamic music rhythm. The ready-to-wear clothing works with ingenious designs have won the audience's amazement and favor.

Previously, the final of clothing accessories design was successfully completed in the collective evaluation of judges and experts.

After the fashion show, Professor Li Chaode, leader of panel of judges commented on the competition. He pointed out that Costume Design Competition of Hunan College Students is an important exchange platform for Costume Design majors in undergraduate colleges in Hunan Province. Through this competition, we can see that the colleges have made great progress in costume design and technology, and some outstanding works can even directly enter the market, which fully reflects the success of holding the competition. The competition will effectively promote the colleges in Hunan Province to further strengthen the art teaching, and promote the exchanges and mutual learning among students. At the same time, enterprises can see the future of Hunan costume design in the award-winning works, and see outstanding students emerge on the stage of Chinese costume design and manufacturing. He said that in recent years, HUTB has made great progress and embarked on a new road of development. The education mode and ideas of HUTB School of School of Art & Design provide a good reference for other universities.

Professor Chen Geng, leader of the supervisor group, expressed his gratitude to the relevant units and the teachers and students participating in the preparation of this competition. He expressed the hope that through the competition, the competition will further promote the teaching, promote mutual learning among colleges in the province, and at the same time, further promote the cooperation of production, education and research between colleges and enterprises, and closely combine discipline construction with market demand, so that the major of costume design and industry in Hunan Province can achieve better development.

During the scoring statistics, the teachers and students of HUTB brought a chorus song Love of Hawthorn Treeand the duet song Toast Song. Love of Hawthorn Treeis exquisite and pleasant to the ears, making the audience immersed in the beautiful years. Toast Songis enthusiastic and unrestrained, expressing the good wishes and respect to the audience.

Based on the principle of fairness and impartiality, the panel of judges conducted the evaluation in strict accordance with the articles of association and evaluation rules of the competition. In the end, 12 works such as "Hu" by Wu Huoqiang of HUTB won the first prize in the final of ready-to-wear clothing, 23 works won the second prize and 35 works won the third prize. Eleven works, such as Floating Life Like Dreamsby Zhou Wanting of Hunan Institute of Science and Technology, won the first prize in the final of clothing accessories, 22 works won the second prize and 33 works won the third prize. HUTB, Hunan Normal University, Hunan Institute of Engineering and other units won the "Excellent Organization Award". Leaders attending the competition presented awards to the award-winning units and students.

Costume Design Competition of Hunan College Students has been successfully held for five times so far, aiming at promoting the study and exchange between the undergraduate universities and majors of costume design in Hunan Province, improving the training level of professional talents, further leading and deepening the comprehensive reform of related disciplines and majors in universities, and has become an important platform to show the education level of costume design in Hunan Province.

The preparatory work for this Costume Design Competition of Hunan College Students is tight and the task is heavy. The leaders of HUTB attached great importance to it, and the School of Art & Design went all out, carefully organized and made overall arrangements, ensuring that the competition was held with high standards, high quality and high level and has been highly affirmed by higher authorities and trade associations and unanimously praised by teachers and students of participating universities, which fully demonstrated the good image and comprehensive strength of HUTB, and added the new achievements for HUTB to achieve the goal of "Three upgrades and three highs" and build an innovative first-class technology and business university with distinctive characteristics.
