2021-05-10

Recently, the results of 2021 iF Design Award were announced. Out of 9509 entries from 52 countries/regions, the professional concept design work “Tea from Small Hills” of teacher Liao Yiyong and graduate student Yang Bowei from the School of Art & Design stood out, and was included in the ranking of professional concept design category.

Tea from the south of the Yangtze River grows on small hills, and tea tasting is more about experiencing a culture and a feeling than a mere beverage. Starting from the design concept of a famous mountain and tea, this design uses tea as a raw material and uses a die casting method to form continuous hills. It vividly connects tea with distant hills, adding a cheerful note to tea drinkers’ daily lives while also bringing people closer to nature. In the meantime, this kind of packaging is very convenient for helping tea drinkers take the same amount of tea each time, thus saving the packaging space and resources. The designers draw an inspiration from Chinese traditional culture, and apply the “design and evaluation system for yin-yang and five elements” under development to design, which gives expression to the unique Chinese aesthetic thought.

The selection of iF Design Award is divided into 9 categories, that is product design, packaging design, communication, service design, architecture, interior architecture, professional concept, user experience and user interface. The award attracts 98 professional jurors around the world. The selection uses the hundred mark system in 5 aspects, that is design concept, appearance, function, differentiation and influence. Any word that obtains more than 269 points will be selected as winner. After selection, the work “Team from Small Hills” with a comprehensive score of 355 was selected as one of the 88 winners in the category of professional concept design.
