[Lushan Lecture] HUTB Holds A Series of Activities of the First “Cultural HUTB” Forum

On the afternoon of March 30, a series of activities of the first “Cultural HUTB” forum of Lushan Lecture were held at the lecture hall of Economic Management Complex of HUTB. The activities consist of the opening ceremony for “Cultural Forum”, the first lecture and the 4thHunan Entrepreneur Seminar. The activities were attended by Chen Xiaohong, HUTB President and CAE Academician, and Liu Guoquan, Vice President of HUTB. Zheng Jiaming, President of Hunan Association for Hunan Entrepreneur Culture Research and Honorary Dean of Hunan Entrepreneur Research Institute, Tang Jianjun, Vice President of Hunan Academy of Social Sciences, Zhou Wenhui, professor and doctoral supervisor of Business School, Central South University, Zou Ming, Vice Party Secretary and Vice President of Dahan Group, and Huang Xingyao, alumni representative and Chairman of Hunan Tongzhou Trading Group, attended the activities as guest speakers. The seminar was attended by specially invited experts and scholars, members of Hunan Association for Hunan Entrepreneur Culture Research, leaders of relevant secondary units, and teacher and student representatives of HUTB.
At the opening ceremony, Chen Xiaohong, HUTB President and CAE Academician, delivered an exuberant speech. She first elaborated the purpose of establishing “Cultural HUTB” forum, sent warm congratulations on the opening of the forum on behalf of HUTB, expressed deep appreciation to people from various sectors for their support of HUTB’s development, and introduced HUTB’s progress in talent training, scientific research, social service and cultural innovation. She expressed the hope that “Cultural HUTB” forum will train outstanding talents, promote common prosperity, and carry forward the cause pioneered by predecessors and forge ahead into the future.
President Chen said that the mission of education is to train talents for the Party and the state. She said that as enhancing cultural education has become a consensus in recent years, helping students to attain cultural quality and cultural spirit is the only way to train talents for the new era. She stressed that cultural education can enable students to understand the significance and value of human existence, grasp basic moral character, values, philosophy of life and how to be good people, and pursue a beautiful realm of life and society. She expressed the hope that HUTB students will pursue lofty ideal and excellent moral sentiment, yearn for perfect personality and elegant demeanor, and achieve the internal and external harmony of life.
President Chen stressed that the deep structure of culture is a key factor that effects the innovation ability of a country or group. She pointed out that a society cannot achieve good science without good culture. She said that the history of human development suggests that the glory of human society is achieved by scientific spirit and cultural spirit, which are “two wheels of the vehicle” or “two wings of the bird”. She expressed the hope that HUTB students will act in a science-based manner, love science, learn science and use science, while being patriotic, pursuing the mission of building a strong country, and dedicating themselves to the service of the country, so as to promote the prosperity and progress of the society through the unity of science and humanities. She reviewed the achievements made by HUTB over the past 70 years or so, and proposed the vision of building “a first-rate technological and business university with outstanding contributions in China”. She called upon HUTB students to carry forward the time-honored philosophy of benefiting people, the spirit of being self-reliant, the concept of being realistic and innovative, and the ideal of pursuing excellence, and forge ahead into the future.
“Patriotism is a red line that continues from excellent traditional culture to red revolutionary culture and socialist culture with Chinese characteristics in the new era,” said President Zheng Jiaming. During the first lecture of “Cultural HUTB” forum, President Zheng Jiaming elaborated his thinking and research on “the origin of patriotism in traditional culture” in terms of two aspects, i.e. the evolution of “state(guo)” and the patriotism in the rule of virtue thought. He pointed out that facing the dual challenges of the relationship between feudal princes and nations and the environmental disasters, our ancient ancestors created the concept of “state(guo)” in the process of annexation and integration, with the first “state(guo)” established during the period from the Spring and Autumn Period to Qin and Han Dynasties. He said that in the transition from vague patriotic consciousness to patriotic thoughts featuring common mode of thinking and behavior, patriotism is not only a feeling, but also a morality.
After the conclusion of the lecture, the 4thHunan Entrepreneur Seminar was held. In response to the call of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China to study the Party history, the 4thHunan Entrepreneur Seminar, with the theme of “Hunan Entrepreneur and Patriotism”, invited President Zheng Jiaming, Vice President Tang Jianjun, Professor Zhou Wenhui, Vice President Zou Ming and Chairman Huang Xingyao to attend as guest speakers. The experts, scholars and entrepreneurs expressed their views and had an in-depth discussion on the relationship between Hunan entrepreneurs and patriotism in terms of patriotism, corporate responsibility, technological innovation, and history and culture, bringing a brilliant feast of ideas for teachers and students.
Characterized by substantial content, deep thinking, detailed and accurate historical data, and easy-to-understand language, the activities deepened the understanding of patriotism, enhanced national pride and confidence, inspired a strong patriotic enthusiasm, and gained applause among the audience. The teachers and students said that they benefited a lot from the activities. They promised to carry forward and practice patriotism, incorporate patriotism into day-to-day study and work, and contribute their wisdom and strengthen to realizing the Chinese Dream of achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
It is learned that as a special section of “Lushan Lecture”, “Cultural HUTB” forum includes a series of activities, including lecture, interview with scholars and MOOC. The forum invites contemporary masters in humanities, artists and outstanding scholars to elaborate their classical theory, unique thinking and great discovery, and to share their ideas and have a discussion with audience. The aim of the forum is to help HUTB teachers and students to grasp new vision and new opportunity in understanding life and society, enlighten the mind, cleanse the soul, foster the spirit of aiming high and pursuing excellence, and promote the cultural building of HUTB.
