Good News! National Center for Basic Science Led by Chen Xiaohong, HUTB President&CAE Academician, Officially Approved

Recently, the National Natural Science Foundation of China informed that the National Center for Basic Science of “Theory and Application of Resources and Environmental Management in the Era of Digital Economy” led by Chen Xiaohong, HUTB President and CAE Academician, was officially approved, making it the first National Center for Basic Science in Hunan Province.

As the top scientific foundation project under the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Center for Basic Science program aims to build a hub of academics, talents and think tanks, target the frontier of science, secure a leading position in international scientific development, and deliver original results of international influence. Boasting a capacity for strategic guidance, creativity and frontier breakthrough, the program is of significance in advancing the Chinese innovation-driven strategy.
Mineral resources and energy sources are inseparable to national development, and serve as an important material basis for the survival and development of human society. The support of modern science and technology becomes increasingly critical as we face the task of tackling the lack of resources supply due to ecological conservation and the environmental protection arising from the development of resources in a coordinated manner. The era of digital economy and technological development characterized by modern information technologies such as big data, AI, cloud computing, IoT and block chain creates a major opportunity for modernizing resources and environmental management. Against such background, guided by the “four orientations” initiative of science and technology innovation put forward by President Xi Jinping, the “Theory and Application of Resources and Environmental Management in the Era of Digital Economy” National Center for Basic Center pursues the safety of resources and environment as the main task, and focuses on research in the fields of the theory and application of mineral resources management and the theory and application of energy resources management. The construction of the center will help foster “an original science theory”, “a groundbreaking technology method”, “a national decision-making platform”, “a top-notch international think tank”, “a new discipline” and “a team of world-class talents”, build a domestically first-class and internationally leading system of resources and environmental management theory and method, modernize the national governance system and capacity in the field of resources and environment, advance the coordinated development of resources, environment and economy under the national security concept, provide solid theoretical foundation and practical guidance for ecological progress and the building of a Beautiful China, and contribute Chinese wisdom to global sustainable development under the concept of building a community with shared future for mankind.
Under the leadership of Central South University, the National Center for Basic Science will carry out joint research with high-standard research teams in pertinent fields from such famous colleges, universities and research institutes as Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Institute of Mineral Resources of Chinese Academy of Geological Science, Hunan University of Technology and Business, the Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration andDevelopment, China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research and Shenzhen University, as well as a number of leading scholars and promising young scholars inside and outside China. The center’s members include 3 CAE academicians, 5 specially-appointed professors included in the Changjiang Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education of China, 6 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 scholars in charge of the Changjiang Scholars Program innovation teams, 6 candidates for the national “Ten Million Talent Project”, 2 recipients of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars and 3 young scholars under the Changjiang Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education of China.
The National Center for Basic Science is another major national platform led by Academician Chen Xiaohong and her research team. The approval of the center marks another major breakthrough made by HUTB in the field of scientific research in recent years, and will help foster a batch of new, landmark research achievements, inspire HUTB’s innovation and vitality in implementing the “Double First-Class” initiative, and contribute wisdom and strength to the implementation of the innovation-driven development strategy and the building of an innovative country.
