Party Secretary Tang Yayang Gives First Lesson to Freshmen Enrolled in 2020

On the afternoon of September 20, over 5000 freshmen enrolled in 2020 had their “first lesson in college”on the track-and-field ground in the North Campus. Party SecretaryTang Yayangdelivered a speech titled“Be a Thoughtful Doer”, in which he introduced the development history of Hunan University of Technologyand Business (HUTB)and its construction and development basis, and discussed paths to growth and success with them.
Mr. Tang, on behalf of the current students and faculty and staff HUTB, extended his warm welcome to the freshmen enrolled in 2020. Heshared the development history of HUTB based on thefourteen key points includingschooling reasons, relocation, merger of colleges (undergraduate education available), normalization of undergraduate education, running of an independent college, availability of international education, offering of adult education, campus expansion, commencement of graduate education, the fourth Party Member Representative Congress, construction as a key university,settingofdoctoral stations, renaming, and the 70thanniversary. He introduced the construction and development basis of HUTB particularly from its geographical advantages, core value ideas, talent cultivation modes, discipline competition events, scientific research learning, practice and training platforms, incentive and assistantship policies, graduation and employment, and future development, and elaborated the phased and long-term university development goals during the period covered by “the 14thFive-year Plan”.
In terms of how to become better, Mr. Tang firstly quote General Secretary Xi Jinping’s message to the young while visiting Yuelu Academy of Hunan University on September 17: the new era is an era of heroes, and the young are exactly in the era; it is expected that all students could seize the day and live it to the fullest, treasure the time to study hard, master knowledge and skills, establish correct world outlook, life outlook and values, tietheirshoelacesproperlybeforeembarkingon the journeyof life, and contribute their wisdom and efforts to realizing Chinese nation's great rejuvenation.
Then, Mr. Tang shared Xi’s ten sentences to students: the first sentence is that patriotism is the deepest and most enduring emotion in the world, and a man’s source of morality and foundation for success; the second one is that you should embrace sunshine from within and be steadfast beneath, keep persistent but not slack off for ideals, and endeavor to create a life which lives up to the era; the third one is that you should do up your first button of life at the very beginning; the fourth one is that the young are at the phase of accumulation, and should gain knowledge as a sponge absorbs water; the fifth one is that you should learn well and keep fit physically; the sixth one is to see the truth beyond the world, or see the world as it is; the seventh one is that youth is precious, and the young should work hard and obtain achievements; the eighth one is that the young should dare to be pioneers but not passers-by or onlookers, and make innovation the driving force to make youth more meaningful; the ninth one is that happiness is achieved through hard work, and youth is engineered to work hard now and to recall in the future; the tenth one is that harness youth to strive for what the Party and people most need. He hoped that students could grow into a greater self, serve the motherland with absolute sincerity, and blend their patriotism and ambition of serving the motherland into the great cause of China’s reform and development and the great struggle of the Chinese to make history.
At last, Mr. Tang encouraged the freshmen enrolled in2020,“Dear students, now we are standing at another new starting line of life. To realize our ideals andgoals, we can choose to be ordinary in the future, but not mediocre. Let’s keep the following sentences in mind:luckisshort-lived, and attitudesdeterminethedestiny; one small step of early starting results in a big step aheadin life. Wish you all healthy, happy, helpful, affectionate, gracefuland aspiring.”
