Opening Ceremony for Freshmen Enrolled in 2020 Held Grandly

Setsail to a long voyage, and be self-disciplinedand diligent in learning. On September20, the opening ceremony for Freshmen Enrolled in 2020was held grandly in the track-and-field ground in the North Campus. All the current leaders, Party committee members and senior professors of Hunan University of Technology and Business (HUTB) were present. Heads of secondary organizations, director of academicaffairs office, freshmanclass instructors, parent representatives, military training instructors and all the enrolled in 2020attended the ceremony which was presided over by Vice President Zeng Fuqiu.
The opening ceremony commenced with the solemnflag-raisingceremony, and allthe students and faculty stoodup, salutedwith eyes and sang ourNational Anthem.
The undergraduate and graduate representatives expressed their love for HUTB and yearningfor the university life. Li Yue, an undergraduate enrolled in 2019from the School of Law & Public Administration, and Liu Wenjie, an undergraduate enrolled in 2017fromthe School of Computer Science & Information Engineering listedthe rapid development achievements of HUTB during the past years, shared their learning and life experiences, and stated that they wouldbravely shoulder lofty missions as“the generation in the powerful country” and demonstrate the ambition and perseverance of young HUTB.He Songtao and Tang Jiayao, freshmen respectively from the School of Economics and Trade, and the School of Art and Design,sharedtheir feeling of immeasurable joy bybeing admitted to HUTB, and said that they would make arduousefforts, fortifytheir confidence and remain true to theiroriginalaspirations, keep positive, engage themselves in study, make their own contributions to HUBT’s goal of building a first-rate university withfirst-rate disciplines, and grow into ageneration ofera who “can accomplishand shoulder important tasks”.
Dr. Cao Wenzhi from the Research Institute of Big Data and Internet Innovation, on behalf of the faculty and staff, extended warm welcome to the freshmenenrolled in 2020, and placedhis hope to them withfive sentencesof ancient Chinese proses: “Nobelief, no achievements”, “Beambitious and diligent to achieve high”, “One cannot exert his/her talent or advance in a correct direction without knowledge”, “One cannotbe defeated by climbing a mountain but stumble against a hill”,and “He who gains fruits should be grateful to the tree. He who drinks water should be grateful to the source”.
PresidentChen Xiaohong (an academician of the Chinese Academy Engineering (CAE)), on behalf of over 20 thousand students and faculty and also about 130 thousand alumni of HUTB, extended congratulations and greetings to the freshmen enrolled in 2020, and delivered the speech titled “Lightup the Youth, and BuildHigh Quality”.
She analyzed the current climates and backgrounds at home and abroad. Once-in-a-centurygreat changes are accelerating when COVID-19 is raging in the world. Despite efforts in the past nine months, the world is still facing danger and many countries are overwhelmed by the pandemic. It makes usthink about what happiness is. We are happy becausewe are living in a great country with remarkablesystem superiorityandcourageous people indomitable willpower.Significant strategic achievements in epidemic prevention and control are making the Chinese people moreunited and China more powerful! Thanks to courage,fearlessness andpersistanceof 1.4 billion Chinese people, and their belief in the supremacy of lifeand in solidarity, China has gained victory and happiness, and built and demonstrated the great Chinese spirit,strength and courageto shoulderresponsibilities!
According to President Chen, atthe national level, we are currently at the historical strategicpass where we are about to achieve the great victory ofbuilding a moderately prosperous society in all respectsand stepping on the new journeyof realizing the second centennial goal; the level of HUTB, we are advancingcourageously to build it into a domesticfirst-classuniversity which “canmake outstanding contributions”, and we are much closer to realization of the dream than any other historical periods.We are all dream chasers on the wayof striving! We should vigorously gather people withthe vision of governingand benefiting others, the spiritof improvingthemselvesand carrying forward stamina, the faith in seeking truth and developing innovations, and ideals of pursuing excellence, and should spare no efforts to build HUTB into an idealdestination ofexploring truth and boostingyouth, and fertile soil for top-notchinnovative, entrepreneurial andapplication-oriented talents!
President Chen also expressed her expectations. The following is an excerpt from her speech.
The university life is a brand-new life phase, full of uncertainty and challenges, and we must be fearless; timeflies and we should be able tofirmly say “I haveno regret” loud when welook back! How can we “be fearless and haveno regret”?Firstly, you should light up the youth and build the qualityof supreme good with profoundgreat love. Patriotism isthe deepest and mostenduring sentimentin the world,and afeeling of belonging.Patriotism is alighthouse tocalibrate dream directions, ourduty and responsibility. What most matters for a man is to know how to love his/her country. Youshould have the senseof responsibility that “I shall dedicate myself to the interests of the country in life and death irrespective of personal will and world”, and be capable of protecting our motherland! I hope you could remember the history and carry forward the great Chinesespirit to ordain conscience for Heaven and Earth, to secure life and fortune for the people, and to establish peace for all future generations!
Secondly, you should light up the youth and build the qualityof supreme perfection with profounddeeplearning. It is difficult for a place which doesn’tadvocate learning to accumulate profound strengthfoundation, and a man who doesn’tuphold learning cannot keep internal sincerityand serenity. Regardless of what essential capabilities mentioned in the era, I believe the “chip” isthe ability of learning and seeking truth. I hope you could always keep learning, and be well-versed in the learning of both ancient and modern times andboth the Chineseand western cultures; I hope you could make reading and learning “fountainhead” toobtain access to a broaderand vaster world and more abundantand fulfilling life!
Thirdly, you should light up the youth and build the qualityof supreme behaviors with profounddeepand wideintegration. We should bepassionate and down-to-earth in life and manifest the gloryof life with the best actions. Fear of difficulties makes genuine integration impossible, and negativityor evasion might make a person cometo beggary or passer-by. Inthe process of growth, everyone should carryforwardthe spirit of “never setting low-hanging goalsor shying away from difficult decisions”, but should meetpressureoflife with firm determination, be accustomed to the normal state of adversity, firmthemind to advanceinall weathers, and march forward regardless of hardship. Youwill be strongin life totackle difficulties ahead!
The precious university time has started, and you are in the new era when you“must strive” and the best yearswhen you “should strive”.HUTB is exactly the stage where you “can strive”. The era calls on university students to lead the pack and standfirm in the forefront of the times. I hope that you could remain true to your original aspirations; just like still water runs deep, I hope you could blendthe school spirit of “Virtue; Erudition; Practice; Self-enhancement” into yourblood, make distinction, diligence and civilization customary, cultivatethe youth with unremitting efforts, generatesuccess with diligence, and create infinitepossibilities with persistentstruggles!Wish all of you would live up to yourglorious youth and make achievements in the new era in HUTB on the way of chasing your own dreams and the Chinesedream!
Then, the university leaders ornamented representative freshmen withschool badges,and other freshmen did it by themselves.
Lastly, Chu Zhaoyang, a major in Applied Physics offered by the School of Mathematics & Statistic, led all the freshmen to solemnly vow: I willbe patriotic and law-abiding, andhonest; care forboth China and the world, and embraceresponsibilities with passion; study hardand goall out in work; be polite and self-cultivated, and be a doer; be grateful to parents and determinedto be a useful person; and cherish time and liveup to expectations.Let diligentstudy be the motivation ofupward-flowing youth, let increasein new abilities,be the power to strive for youth, make distinction, diligence and civilization customary, and realize the youth dream in passionatestruggles!
