Our University Held a Grand Opening Ceremony for 2018 New Students

On Sep. 17, our University grandly held 2018 new students opening ceremony in the gymnasium of the south campus and track-and-field ground of the north campus. Tang Yayang, Secretary of the Party Committee of the university, Chen Xiaohong, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of our University, Senior Professor Liu Siwei and Wang Minggao, Vice President Peng Jinqing, Zeng Fuqiu, Li Dingjun and Liu Guoquan attended the ceremony. Some persons in charge of secondary units, drillmasters and all 2018 new students attended the ceremony. The opening ceremony was presided over by Vice President Zeng Fuqiu.

The ceremony officially began under the accompaniment of the grand national anthem. Leaders of our University presented awards to excellent individual students and teams in 2017 - 2018 academic year, and wore school badges for the representatives of new students.

Subsequently, the representative of new undergraduate students and postgraduate freshmen and internal students delivered a speech successively. Yang zhiwei, from Grade 2015 of Advertisement of School of Literature and Journalism, said that we should boldly try to switch between different roles and bravely define many possibilities in life. Wang Ruizhi, a postgraduate of law in Grade 2017, said that innovation spirit and thirst for knowledge are the academic vision that we have been pursuing. Tang Dongqi, the representative of new undergraduate students, said that they would interpret the responsibility and mission of HNUC with actions. Peng Feifan, a 2018 freshman majoring Big Data of School of Mathematics and Statistics, expressed that she would strive to inherit and carry forward the spirit of "rising up upon hearing the crow of a rooster and practicing with the sword, climbing high and gazing far, and having the courage to think and act", and become a successful and responsible student of Hunan University of Commerce.

On behalf of all teachers, teacher Wang Ren from School of Finance congratulated the new students on their successful admission by the University and seized the golden opportunity of the development of HNUC. Mr. Wang hoped that students would take the initiative to adjust their mentality, study, and seize opportunities to show themselves, improve themselves, actively manage their own studies, and become the master of their own future.

On the opening ceremony, President Academician Chen Xiaohong extended welcome to all new students and parents, and delivered a speech titled "Striving to Be Better", which serves as the first class given to new students by an Academician and President. She said that, by taking the first-class concept, first-class target, first-class standard, first-class quality and first-class mechanism as the guidance, the University promotes the realization of "six high targets", that is, the "high peak and plateau" of disciplines, "high-end" scientific researches, "high grade and high quality" talent cultivation, "high docking" with the social services, "high vision" of international school-running and "high-efficiency" internal management. HNUC will grow and progress with us, and spare no efforts in student growth and success. She proposed six kinds of thinking to new students. Through a series of questions, she led students to deeply think, encourage them to overcome difficulties, be firm, move forward courageously, undertake the responsibilities and make contributions to the society and others.

She stressed that young people should be passionate, righteous and have dreams, and be the pioneer of the times. She reminds that students should aware of three kinds of risks: The first one is the danger of becoming "self-centered". The second one is the danger of becoming "weary plaything". The third one is the danger of falling into "self-mediocrity".

He put forward four hopes to students: First of all, I hope that you can cultivate better yourself in love learning and be diligent and thoughtful seekers. Through the study, I hope all of you could distinguish between the right and wrong, stay curious, and develop the critical thinking and innovative spirit; Through the study, all of you could cultivate a rich cultural deposit, walk out of the narrow self-cognition, appreciate the vastness of the world, have a higher pattern and broader vision; To be better during the diligent study and good thinking, and be a leader of the times! Next, I hope that you can shape yourself better in self-cultivation and be the owner of the beauty of life. I hope that through self-cultivation, you can become people with both moral and ability, people with sound personality, lofty demeanor, distinguished sentiment, elegant temperament, and people who dare to challenge and introspect, to become the first-class owners of the beauty of life. Finally, I hope that you can be better in the process of integration and innovation, and become generalists of integrated innovation. In addition, students should work together to make China become the world's most powerful country in science and technology. I hope you can lead innovation in the interdisciplinary integration, dare to break through the boundary, dare to explore the unknown field, and constantly move toward a new academic height; Improve your realm and humanistic quality during the integration of science, humanity and art; Expand the pattern in the integration of different cultures, learn to respect the differences of culture, and constantly explore the international vision, and coexist harmoniously by learning from each other.

She encouraged students to become better in the firm self-discipline, and stressed that the HNUC does not cultivate "parasites" and "weak-kneed" person. Students graduated from HNUC are strong men, strong-kneed persons, innovators, and doers. In addition, students should integrate the school motto into their blood, and write their dreams and inspirational legends with enthusiasm, passion and hard work.

At last, 2018 new students solemnly swore that: Love the country and obey the law, insist on the principle of honesty, love the whole world, undertake responsibility, study hard, struggle, be polite and courteous, cultivate the moral characters, pay attention to action, thank parents, determine to become a talent, glorify and illuminate Hunan University of Commerce, never disappoint the expectation, the youth is strong, the country is strong, make excellence, civilization and diligence become a habit, and realize the youth dream in the passionate struggle.
