The University Celebrated 34th Teachers' Day and Rewarded Advanced Collectives and Individuals

On Sep. 11, the University held a meeting in Yingcai Lecture Hall to celebrate the 34th Teachers' Day and reward the advanced collectives and individuals who obtained excellent achievements in various fields in the past year. All leaders and senior professors of the University attended the meeting, and Vice President Peng Jinqing presided over the meeting. All prize-winners and cadres of division level, provincial Party representatives, representatives of the People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference at all levels, the chairmen of all democratic parties, teaching supervisors, teachers' representative, students' representatives, representatives of the emeritus and retired, and personnel related to the teaching management work participated in the meeting.
The meeting kicked off under the accompaniment of the grand national anthem. Vice President Liu Guoquan read the commendation decision on teaching and the list of prize-winners; Vice President Li Dingjun read the commendation decision on scientific research and the list of prize-winners; and Vice President Zeng Fuqiu read the commendation decision on the thanksgiving awards and the list of prize-winners. There were more than 60 persons won the awards, such as the fourth provincial publicity culture system "five groups" of talents, Hunan Natural Science Award, Business Development and Research Achievement Awards of Ministry of Commerce, 2017 Hunan Normal University Teachers Classroom Teaching, Information Teaching Competition Award, 2018 Academic Newcomer Award of Hunan University of Commerce, 2018 Outstanding Teachers, "My Favorite Teacher" in 2017, 2016 - 2017 Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award of Hunan University of Commerce, 2018 Outstanding Teaching Departments, National Excellent Communist Youth League Cadre, Advanced Individuals of "Three Education" in 2018, and "Thanksgiving Award Funds for Outstanding Teachers" of Hunan University of Commerce in 2018. Students' representatives presented the flowers to the prize-winning teachers.
As the teachers' representatives, Professor Lu Shan of College of Economics and Trade, Professor Li Xiaolong of School of Computer Science & Information Technology and Doctor Zhang Jian of School of Mathematics and Statistics made a speech successively, and shared their feelings and experiences on imparting knowledge and educating people, scientific research and innovation.
In the speech, President Academician Chen Xiaohong extended festive greetings and high respect to all faculty and staff. After the brief summary of the achievements made in the previous academic year, surrounding the working tasks of the new semester, she offered to further "clearly define the direction, strengthen the team, construct the platform, optimize the disciplines, grasp the projects and make flexible use of mechanisms" in accordance with the strategic deployment of "establishing the first-class concept, first-class goal, first-class standard, first-class quality and first-class mechanism". Compared with the 50 items of key tasks set out at the beginning of the year, she expressed that, in the second half of the year, the University would strive to make greater breakthroughs in "three promotions" and "double first-rates" construction, teaching, scientific research, personnel reform and teaching staff construction, international exchange and cooperation, and the fundamental construction of the campus. President Chen Xiaohong hoped that all teachers of the University should firmly keep the instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping in mind, strive to be a guide of students, be strivers of education reform, and be a good teacher with ideals and beliefs, moral sentiments, solid knowledge and benevolence, cultivate more excellent talents by using the full love for students in mind and excellent teaching ability and scientific teaching methods, and make new and greater contributions to the "three promotions " and "double first-rates" construction.
Tang Yayang, Secretary of the Party Committee of the University, extended sincere greetings to the faculty and staff and retired comrades who have devoted their wisdom and painstaking efforts to the development of the University. He reviewed General Secretary Xi Jinping's requirements for excellent teachers with "four haves" and those for "four unifications", as well as General Secretary Xi Jinping's important discussion on respecting teachers and valuing education proposed at the recent national education conference. He proposed that General Secretary Xi Jinping's speech made us feel the honor, responsibility and mission of being a teacher. By taking the stories that Liang Qichao sacrificed his life to maintain western medicines and Nuclear Physicist Zhao Zhongyao risked his life to protect 50 mg radium as a starting point, he described "What is knowledge? What is learning? What is a scholar?" and their special significance to a mature university. He believed that the learned scholars study profound knowledge, and scholars are the foundation of a university, and learning is the soul of a university. Knowledge, learning and scholars jointly constitute the unique, profound and irreplaceable core elements of a university. In addition, he put forward the idea of devoting to learning, advocating academic research, and encouraging scholars to make achievements, and inspiring each other.
