The 22nd College Students English Speech Contest Held in Hunan University of Commerce

The 22nd College Students English Speech Contest of Hunan University of Commerce whose subject was If I were the President of HNUC was held in the multi-functional conference hall of Lingnan Campus on the afternoon of May 17th. Vice president Liu Guoquan, secretary of CPC General Branch in College of Foreign Languages Hu Yanfen and associate dean Bai Zhenxian were present and watched the contest with other faculties and students. At the beginning, vice president Liu Guoquan expressed thanks to those teachers and students who engaged in this contest’s organization and gave encouragement to contestants. He said that to communicate with fluent spoken English is an inevitable path to master a language, and a crucial method to broaden mind, enrich life and promote confidence. A college student should master a foreign language to be a person who truly opens his eyes to look at the outside world. Reviving the past years of English teaching and talents training in our university, he observed that our school has a good tradition in English Speech Contest in that our school was the first universities which applied “Crazy English” training methods into teaching and then fostered a number of speech masters. He pointed out that this contest was an exercise for English teaching and also a useful way to increase learning efficiency.
This contest included two parts, the prepared speech and impromptu speech. Contestants made a 2-minute impromptu speech on the topic they got on the spot after 3-minute prepared speech without paper.
23 contestants raised many measures to build their campus fluently with a silver voice and deep feeling in the contest. They mapped a blue blueprint for our university in their exciting speeches to the audience, thus winning unceasing applause.
After the fierce competition, Liu Qinzhe from English Class 1402, Xiao Nan from Finance Class 1405 and Accounting Class’s Tan Yuexi, with their terrific performance, won the first prize of English major group and the first prize of non-major group respectively; those students, such as Wang Jia from English Class 1403, Pan Xiuyu from Advertising Class 1401 and so on, were awarded the second prizes; the third prize fell on Zhang Linghui from Business English Class 1402, Luo Ziyin from Investing Class 1401 and other contestants .
In the end, Mr. Andrew, our foreign teacher made a brief comment on this contest. He approved contestants’ performance in the prepared part; on the other hand, he stressed that students should read widely to accumulate more materials, so that they wouldn’t dig out nothing to say in the impromptu part. Besides, to apprehend the topic accurately is as well a shortcut leading to high scores.
It was said that our school would pick out 3 representatives to attend the 22 College Students English Speech Contest to be held in Hunan University of Arts and Science in the coming October. So far, the 22th College Students English Speech Contest for Hunan University of Commerce has come to end in success.
