CAE Academician Sun Yongfu Delivers a Lecture at the "Lectures for Cadres"

2023-11-05

On the morning of November 3, HUTB held the 7th Training Session of "Lectures for Cadres" and the 169th "Lushan Lecture" in the Xiangjiang Lecture Hall of the Xiangjiang Building. Sun Yongfu, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, former Executive Deputy Minister and Deputy Secretary of the Party Group of the Ministry of Railways, was invited to conduct a special training for HUTB's cadres and staff. Chen Xiaohong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Secretary of CPC HUTB Committee, Director of Xiangjiang Laboratory, also presided over the lecture and gave a concluding speech. All Chief Leaders, members of the CPC Committee, deputy department level and above cadres, CPC branch secretaries, department heads, and teaching and research section directors attended the training.

Academician Sun Yongfu gave a speech on "Strategic Thinking on the Development of High-Speed Maglev Railways in China". He elaborated on the cutting-edge trends and development prospects of China's maglev railway development from four aspects: analysis of strategic requirements, exploration of technological routes, conception of strategic paths, and suggestions for promoting measures. He pointed out that with the rapid development of science, technology, and the economy, China's railway construction technology has made a leap from "catching up" to "taking the lead" globally. The passenger transportation demand has shifted from "being able to travel" and "being able to transport" to "traveling well" and "transporting quickly". Constructing high-speed maglev railways is one of the strategic directions for the next phase of railway construction.

During the lecture, Academician Sun Yongfu analyzed the advantages and characteristics of maglev railways, and introduced the research and construction progress of four types of technologies commonly used internationally: constant conductive electromagnetic levitation, low-temperature superconducting electric suspension, high-temperature superconducting permanent magnet suspension, and permanent magnetic electric suspension. He also compared and analyzed them from aspects such as working mechanism, technical characteristics, core technology, and development level. He pointed out that high-speed maglev transportation is a complex system engineering and should follow the innovation research and development process of large-scale system engineering. He also shared insights on constructing a key technology system for high-speed maglev and building a high-speed maglev railway network. Academician Sun Yongfu's lecture had a broad vision, forward-looking content, detailed data, and clear viewpoints. It was filled with a rigorous attitude and lofty aspiration for pursuing technological innovation and building a scientifically strong country. His speech inspired strong resonance among the teachers and students present, earning enthusiastic applause.

In the concluding speech, Academician Chen Xiaohong stated that Academician Sun Yongfu systematically elaborated on China's development strategy for high-speed maglev railways, greatly broadening our horizons and increasing our knowledge. High-speed maglev is the fastest ground transportation form that can be achieved today and is an important achievement of technological progress. It has significant and far-reaching implications for building a new engine for China's high-end equipment industry, forming a new advantage in leading rail transportation, seizing the commanding heights of scientific and technological competition, accelerating the construction of modern comprehensive three-dimensional transportation networks, and supporting the strategies of "building a great power science and technology" and "building a country with strong transportation network". She expresses profound respect for Academician Sun Yongfu's diligent efforts and pursuit of excellence in the development of China's railway industry. She hopes that all the staff and workers of HUTB will actively engage in scientific and technological innovation with the spirit of "striving without regrets and striving without reservation". She encourages them to make new and greater contributions to the high-quality development of the country and regional economy.

Sun Yongfu, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is a former executive vice minister and deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the Ministry of Railways. He is an expert in railway engineering technology and management, primarily engaged in research on railway engineering technology and management. He has won the special prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the gold prize of the Contribution Award for China's Foreign Aid, the Special Contribution Award for Scientific Management, and the honor of being one of China's top ten construction professionals. He is a leading figure in China's railway construction, a practitioner of railway reform, and the commander of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway project. During his tenure as the head of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway construction, he organized efforts to overcome three major obstacles: "permafrost, high-altitude hypoxia, and fragile ecology", successfully building the world's highest and longest plateau railway.
