2024-06-23

The HUTB choral concert resonates in our hearts, inspiring us to chase the light and pursue our dreams in the best years of our lives. On the evening of June 19th, HUTB hosted the “Chorus of HUTB - Chasing the Light” 2024 Special Choral Concert at Xiangjiang Lecture Hall. Chen Xiaohong, Secretary of the CPC HUTB Committee, Director of Xiangjiang Laboratory, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, along with Zhang Ling, Vice President of HUTB, and Yang Liangqi, Member of the CPC HUTB Committee and Vice President, were joined by esteemed guests, faculty, and students in an immersive celebration of the choral art, which showcased the power and strength as we forge ahead in the new era.

Professor Xiao Ming, a national first-grade conductor and Dean of the School of Music, served as the music director of the concert. Liu Junjie, a talented young choral conductor from the School of Music, acted as the event planner, director, and conductor. The Changfeng Chorus of the School of Music, the HUTB Tianyin Teachers' Chorus, and the Violet Chorus of Central South University (in a special guest appearance) graced the stage with their performances. The event was hosted by Li Cheng, a young faculty member from the School of Music.

The concert kicked off with the enigmatic and exuberant performance of “Song of the Earth” by the Changfeng Chorus. Through their expressive body movements and vocalizations, the chorus members mimicked the sounds of nature, including the sounds of the winds, rains, thunders, and diverse wildlife calls, effectively transporting the audience into the mystery and allure of tropical rainforests. “The Pursuit” was both unwavering and relentless, as well as purposeful. This piece narrated the journey of the Chinese Communists in pursuit of their ideals. The melodious and profound “Mount Moni” evoked a sense of awe and reverence for the beauty of nature and a longing for a spiritual home. “Hawthorn Tree” featured a refreshing and mellifluous melody, evoking a sense of nostalgia for the sweetness of youth and memories of innocence. The impassioned performance of “Zhuoma” showcased the resilience and beauty of the grassland maiden, offering a delightful auditory experience. “Youth, Oh Youth” was performed with great passion, evoking a profound nostalgia and yearning for the days of youth. The powerful performance of “The Drums of Yuyang” allowed the audience to travel back in history to experience the majestic grandeur. “The Girl with Wings”, featuring a cheerful and ethereal melody, was adapted with the personal input of the renowned Chinese pianist and composer, Mr. Chen Yixin, who also performed at the concert. The “Russian Song Medley” captured the distinct traits of the Russian nation, showcasing their passion and effervescence. “Our Era” was a spirited and impassioned song, inspiring a sense of pride and responsibility in the younger generation of college students in the new era. “Funicular, Funicular” exuded courage and determination, expressing heartfelt aspirations for our nation's prosperity and technological self-sufficiency. “The World of Mortals” was a profoundly moving performance, skillfully weaving a bittersweet tapestry of life that resonated with the audience. “Going Where the Wind Blows” seemed to take the audience on a fascinating journey in pursuit of freedom and dreams. “Homecoming” was a testament to artistic tension and impact, featuring an initial cappella segment followed by a segment incorporating the distinctive beats of Chinese drums and ethnic dance choreography, evoking our yearning for home and a happy sense of belonging. “Goodbye” evoked a poignant sense of farewell and parting, but also conveyed a sense of hope for the future. “Smooth Sailing” featured a cheerful rhythm, brimming with heartfelt blessings that offer warmth and strength for the journey ahead. “Glorious Days” echoed with exuberant optimism, filled with intense emotions and boundless energy, embodying our shared aspiration for a brighter future.

It is worth noting that "The Girl with Wings," “Goodbye”, “Smooth Sailing”, and “Glorious Days” were all presented in an adapted form for the first time.

As the event wrapped up, the leaders and guests were invited on stage for a chorus performance of “The Story of Time” and “The Same Song” with faculty and students at the concert. The mellifluous melodies of these two songs evoked nostalgic recollections and shared emotions about the good old days, and reminded us to cherish the fond memories and enduring sentiments as we navigate the journey of life.

This marked the successful conclusion of the “Chorus of HUTB - Chasing the Light” 2024 Special Choral Concert, which was the third season of our university's “Chorus of HUTB” concert series. This concert allowed the audience to experience the unique charm of the fusion of culture and technology, and to appreciate our efforts in advancing the choral art on campus.
