[Lectures for Cadres] Report Meeting on Exemplary Achievements of Academician Li Deren Held at HUTB

On the morning of September 11, the university held a report meeting on the exemplary achievements of Academician Li Deren as part of the Training Session of "Lectures for Cadres" in the Xiangjiang Lecture Hall of Xiangjiang Building. Li Jian, Vice President of the China Association of Senior Scientists and Technicians and former CPC Committee Secretary of Wuhan University, delivered a presentation titled "Li Deren: The Person Who Polished the FAST for the Republic." The report meeting was hosted by Chen Xiaohong, CAE Academician, Director of Xiangjiang Laboratory, and Secretary of CPC HUTB Committee.
All Chief Leaders, members of CPC HUTB Committee, and all division-level and section-level cadres, as well as teaching department heads and Party branch secretaries, attended the report meeting.
Academician Li Deren has taught at Wuhan University for many years. He is a member of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a world-renowned expert in photogrammetry and remote sensing, and a leading figure in contemporary spatial information science in China. As a strategic scientist, he has made significant contributions to the establishment of China's high-resolution Earth observation system and the country's transition from a major remote sensing nation to a strong one, effectively polishing the FAST for the Republic. In June of this year, he was awarded the National Highest Science and Technology Award, with General Secretary Xi Jinping presenting him with the medal and certificate at the Great Hall of the People.
Professor Li Jian has known Academician Li Deren for nearly 30 years. He centered his presentation around four of Academician Li Deren's key quotes: "My career is in China. I am Chinese, and I want to contribute to China's development.” "The needs of the country are my goals. I will do whatever the country needs me to do.” "Of all my titles, I value the title of teacher the most. The greatest joy of my life is teaching and cultivating talent for the country.” "I want to learn and work for life, and contribute to the Party and the people until the end.” He shared four stories from Academician Li Deren's life journey with the teachers, telling with deep emotion about Academician Li's path from studying in Germany and returning to serve his country, leading his team to focus on breakthroughs in critical core technologies, selflessly nurturing talent as a mentor, and his lifelong commitment to learning, working, and contributing.
In his report, Professor Li Jian shared anecdotes about Academician Li Deren's remarkable achievements from the perspectives of colleagues and friends. Through vivid photos and touching stories, he illustrated Academician Li's broad vision, profound insights, and noble aspirations as a strategic scientist in an engaging and accessible manner. He stated that the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee has sounded the call for a new era of further comprehensive reform, opening up vast prospects for Chinese-style modernization. We should learn from the older generation of scientists represented by Academician Li Deren, further promote the spirit of scientists and educators, stay true to our original aspirations, and keep our mission in mind. We must bravely move forward and contribute our wisdom and strength to achieving the second centenary goal.
Secretary Chen Xiaohong delivered a concluding speech, expressing heartfelt gratitude for Professor Li Jian's wonderful report. She noted that Professor Li's presentation was captivating and genuinely touching, vividly recounting Academician Li Deren's sincere heart, patriotic feelings, masterful demeanor, relentless pursuit, and spirit of selfless dedication, which greatly inspired the faculty and staff of our university. She emphasized that all faculty and staff at the university should take Academician Li Deren and the older generation of scientists as role models. On the new journey of integrated development of education, technology and talent development, we must pursue reform and innovation with determination. We should diligently focus on talent cultivation, scientific research, transformation of technological achievements, and fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among students, demonstrating a new sense of responsibility and achievement through our actions, and making new and greater contributions to the realization of the Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
