[Lushan Grand Lecture Hall] Prof. Qiu Dong from Beijing Normal University Lectured at HNUC.

Lecture 87 of Lushan Grand Lecture Hall opened at Lezhi Building F201 on December 11th. Prof. Qiu Dong, The Changjiang Scholar and a professor of Beijing Normal University, gave an academic report entitled “Developing Criticism of Contemporary Economic Statistics”. The lecture was chaired by Professor Xie Xiaoliang, Dean of the College of Mathematics and Statistics. Teachers and students of related majors in our university listened to the lecture.

In the lecture, Prof. Qiu Dong elaborated on two big problems of “National Economic Statistics Path” and” Model and Investment in The Amalgamation of Ice and Fire”. Prof. Qiu Dong pointed out that we need mathematics, but not only mathematics. Science needs to pursue precision, and so does social science. Mathematical accuracy, however, is not the only kind of accuracy. Relative to formal accuracy, “Content Accuracy” is more essential than formal accuracy. Prof. Qiu Dong believes that the main contradiction of economic statistics lies not in the simple mathematical tools, but in the practical continuation of the logic of economic measurement, the interpretation of the socio-economic meaning of the calculation results, the in-depth analysis of the relationship between variables and the re-examination of basic economic concepts. 

In the interactive session, Prof. Qiu Dong patiently answered the questions of teachers and students. The whole lecture was academic, practical and instructive. Prof. Qiu Dong made a comprehensive analysis of the connotation and development trend of contemporary economic statistics from a new perspective and a critical perspective, which was well received by teachers and students. (Text/Xie xiaoliang  Picture/Ouyang Miaolong)
