NSFC, Ten Years of Management Science: China & World

2016-11-24

2015 is an important year for NSFC to formulate its "13th Five-ear Plan". It is necessary to sort and evaluate the development trend of management science in China and other main countries in the world and draw a "geomorphologic map" for the development of management science to provide reference for learning about the development status of management science in China and formulate a scientific development strategy for management science of China.

Invited by NSFC, the research group of CAS Literature Information Center compiled a series of evaluation research reports about the discipline development situation Ten Years of Management Science: China & World. The report makes an evaluation on the development trend of management science of China and the world between 2004 and 2013 from the aspects of quantity of WoS paper, productivity and output efficiency of highly cited papers, the relative status of independent research, etc. The report notes that the quantity of WoS papers in management science of China increase rapidly in this ten years, and become the third main output country of papers after America and UK. In addition, the average number of papers quoted in recent five years ranks only second to Netherlands with a small output of papers in the world, and ranks above the developed countries such as America and England, etc. In 2013, the average number of papers quoted of China ranked the third place in the world, and the world share increases by 7.4%, becoming the country with the fastest growing speed among TOP 20 countries. Meanwhile, the output efficiency of papers which are frequently quoted (i.e. the proportion of highly cited papers in all papers of China) was higher than America in 2010-2013. In the four branch disciplines of management science, the most "eye-catching one" is management science and engineering performance. The number of papers, quoted papers and highly cited papers in 2009-2013 ranks the second place in the world, taking the lead of other three branches with its relatively strong international comparative advantages. However, business administration was the discipline, which develops most rapidly in the past 10 years. In the later five years, the three indexes leaped five places into the third place. Additionally, it is important to note that the average cited papers and paper citation rate of public management research perform excellently, with the average cited papers ranking only second to Netherland and citation rate ranking first in the world.

To observe the details of management science discipline development, NSFC invited over 20 top-level domestic experts from different fields to compile the review report about the development trend of important research aspects of management science. The president Chen Xiaohong of our university was invited to make review and outlook in the field of "decision and decision supporting system". In the review report, Professor Chen Xiaohong introduced several international hot topics in this research fields, such as management decision model innovation under big data era, group decision behavior characteristics and group decision theory, research of complex large group decision coordination mechanism, etc. She also pointed that it is an inevitable trend that decision depends on big data analysis, but not experience or institution. Exploring structural distribution and forming rules of decision-making bid data will be the important research direction of management decision in quite a long time of future.

During the past decade, the development of management science of China has made an outstanding contribution to the economic and social development of the world and China, and showed a strong international influence.
