Our Team Secures National Championship in the Qualifying Round of Humanoid Robot Innovation Challenge

2024-06-25

The 26th China Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Competition (CRAIC) has recently concluded its Humanoid Robot Innovation Challenge qualifying round with great success. The “Pioneering Innovators Team”, spearheaded by instructors Jiang Lin and Peng Han from the School of Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing and comprising core members Pan Yan, Yin Shi, Tan Li, and other students from the “Academician Elite Program in Big Data and AI”, was awarded the top prize at the national level. Another team claimed the second prize in Hunan Province.

In recent years, the university has aligned itself with the strategic priorities of the country under the visionary leadership of the Party Committee. By leveraging the National Center for Basic Science project, Xiangjiang Laboratory and other high-caliber scientific and technological innovation platforms, we have been vigorously developing new engineering programs. Also, we have been experimenting with talent development modes featuring “Digital Intelligence+” “Green+” and “Artificial Intelligence+”. By implementing programs such as the “Xiangjiang Academy - Hong Class”, the “Academician Elite program”, and the “Major + Micro-Major” programs, we have made great strides in nurturing interdisciplinary and innovative talents. Our students have achieved great success in a number of high-profile national competitions, including the “Challenge Cup” National Extracurricular Academic and Technological Projects Competition for College Students, the “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for College Students, the China University Robot Competition, and others.

Since April of this year, the two teams, under the expert mentorship of their instructors, have been tirelessly working day and night. They have been deeply immersed in research, meticulously optimizing the technical parameters of their project. In the simulation competition, the robot they invented completed a slew of challenges with great finesse. These included navigating a gravel path, precisely closing a designated valve, overcoming obstacles, climbing up the incline, ringing a doorbell after a ladder ascent, and adeptly executing an indoor task plan. These outstanding performances underscored the robots' superb motor balance and sophisticated matching algorithms. Ultimately, they clinched the national championship, overtaking teams from prestigious universities designated as “top-tier universities with leading academic programs”.

The 26th CRAIC Humanoid Robot Innovation Challenge, hosted by the CRAIC Organizing Committee, adheres to the philosophy of “promoting research through the competition, promoting industrial production through research, and pooling collective wisdom to tackle challenges”. The competition is designed to promote the integration of upstream and downstream value chain ecosystems, and to accelerate the mass production of humanoid robots by focusing on typical domestic and specialized application scenarios. The competition closely mirrors real-world scenarios, and has created a number of “firsts” in its design. This is the first competition to transition from simulated to authentic domestic and specialized application scenarios. It is also the first competition in fully automated task management, and the first to introduce generative large-model LLM task planning assessment in a competition. By incorporating industrial and real-life application scenarios into the humanoid robot competition, the event aims to capitalize on the strengths of diverse research domains, collaboratively addressing complex challenges in future universal application scenarios. This would facilitate the transition of humanoid robots from virtual to real-world applications and from technological innovation to industrial application, expediting the mass production and widespread adoption of these robots. The offline final is scheduled to take place in Suzhou this August.
