HUTB Conducts 2024 Spring Semester Nighttime Fire Evacuation Drill
2024-05-29
On May 22, the university, in collaboration with the Wangcheng District Fire Brigade, conducted a spring nighttime fire evacuation drill on the North Campus. The drill involved members of the Moon Island Fire and Rescue Station from the Wangcheng District Fire Brigade and over 200 faculty, staff, and students from the university.
The drill simulated a fire caused by a short circuit in the dormitory's electrical wiring. At 8:00 p.m., students’ cries for help, "Fire! Fire!" were heard from the dormitory windows. The entire building was filled with thick smoke and plunged into darkness. In the emergency, dormitory staff immediately activated the fire alarm, quickly assessed the scene, and efficiently organized students to evacuate through safe exits, following the principle of "safety first, nearest exit first."
While calling 119 for a fire emergency, relevant university staff were organizing the evacuation, counting students and performing initial fire suppression in the meantime. Upon the arrival of three specialized fire trucks, they reported the basic fire situation and emphasized the number and specific locations of trapped students. After checking the situation, the Moon Island Fire and Rescue Station firefighters immediately organized rescue and firefighting efforts. The "fire" was successfully extinguished, and trapped students were rescued to the ground by using a ladder. The university’s medical personnel provided emergency care. The drill concluded successfully, with no casualties reported.
After the drill, Instructor Wei Qing from the Wangcheng District Fire Brigade reviewed the event: first, he praised the professionalism and emergency response skills of the university's participating staff and students; second, he analyzed and summarized the issues and shortcomings observed during the drill; third, he demonstrated and explained fire safety knowledge, including escape route planning, the use of fire extinguishers, wearing fire masks, and correctly using fire hoses, and guided the students in hands-on practice.
Practice is for training, and training is for battle. This nighttime fire evacuation drill was part of the university's Disaster Prevention and Reduction Month and Work Safety Month series of activities. It also showcased the regularization, institutionalization, and professionalization of university-district joint safety emergency drill activities. The drill further enhanced the practical evacuation skills, preparedness awareness, and collaborative capabilities of both staff and students during nighttime emergencies, ensuring that everyone can escape efficiently and orderly in emergencies, thereby building a safe and happy campus.
