From November 16 to 17, the 2nd Hunan College Students' Intercultural Competence Contest, organized by the Department of Education of Hunan Province and hosted by our university, was held at our campus. Zhang Ling, Vice President of HUTB, Zhang Hong, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, and Professor Liu Bai from Hunan Normal University, who is also the head of the contest's organizing committee secretariat, attended the closing ceremony of the contest.
The CPC HUTB Committee attaches great importance to the organization of this contest. Vice President Zhang Ling pointed out at the closing ceremony that intercultural communication is not only a knowledge and skill but also a responsibility and mission. In today's globalized world, we need to better understand and respect different cultures, and more importantly, we need to learn how to communicate and collaborate in a multicultural environment.
The competition was divided into two groups: the Chinese Student Group and the International Student Group. The Chinese Student Group competed in English, while the International Student Group competed in Chinese. A total of 21 teams from Chinese students and three teams from international students stood out from 56 universities across the province and advanced to the on-site finals. On the competition stage, the participants demonstrated their ability to analyze and address intercultural issues through various segments, including case development and analysis, interpretation of famous quotes, knowledge quizzes, situational commentary, and telling China's stories. They fully showcased their understanding and respect for the diversity of world civilizations, as well as their love for and confidence in Chinese culture. After a day and a half of intense competition, the representative teams from Hunan University, Hunan Normal University, and HUTB emerged as the champions of the Hunan regional competition and will represent the province in the national finals. The championship in the International Student Group was won by the international student teams from Central South University and Central South University of Forestry and Technology.
The college students' intercultural competence contest provided a platform for teachers and students across the province to showcase their intercultural communication skills and exchange experiences in intercultural teaching. It promoted innovation in talent cultivation models and pathways in higher education, empowering the development of well-rounded, internationally competitive talent with a strong Chinese identity, global vision, professional expertise, intercultural communication abilities, and global competence. This contest plays a significant role in promoting the excellence of Chinese culture, telling China's stories in foreign languages, and advancing the global reach of Chinese culture.
