Ding Xuexiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, attended the 2024 He Liang He Li Foundation Award Ceremony and delivered a speech on November 3 in Beijing.
Ding Xuexiang pointed out that the key to Chinese-style modernization lies in technological modernization, and the key to fully building a socialist modernized strong country is self-reliance and self-improvement in science and technology. We must deeply study and implement General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speech at the National Science and Technology Conference, set the strategic goal of becoming a technological powerhouse by 2035, and, with the firm determination and resolute will of "sharpening a sword for ten years," accelerate the realization of high-level self-reliance and self-improvement in science and technology, providing solid technological support for Chinese-style modernization.
Ding Xuexiang emphasized that scientists and researchers are the main force in building a technological powerhouse. In the new era and on the new journey, they must take the lead, shoulder heavy responsibilities, and strive to pass on the historical baton. Scientists should vigorously promote the spirit of the scientist, realize their life’s value in serving the development of the Party and the country’s cause, actively explore frontier fields of science and technology, achieve breakthroughs in forward-looking basic research and groundbreaking original results, and boldly tackle key core technologies. They should apply scientific achievements to the great cause of Chinese-style modernization. Additionally, efforts should be made to cultivate high-level scientific talent, ensuring that China’s scientific endeavors continue to thrive and that there is a strong succession of talent. Relevant departments should act as "logistical ministers," increase policy support, strengthen services and guarantees, and create a favorable environment for scientists to focus on their research without distractions.
The He Liang He Li Foundation was established to promote the development of China's science and technology and to reward scientists who have made outstanding contributions. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the foundation's establishment. Over the past 30 years, a total of 1,638 scientists have been awarded. The 2024 He Liang He Li Foundation "Science and Technology Achievement Award" is presented to Academician Li Jiayang, a leading scientist in plant molecular genetics. In addition, 55 scientists have been honored with the "Science and Technology Progress Award" and the "Science and Technology Innovation Award."
Professor Chen Xiaohong, Secretary of the CPC HUTB Committee, Director of Xiangjiang Laboratory, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, was awarded the He Liang He Li Foundation "Science and Technology Progress Award" for her innovative contributions in intelligent technology and management decision-making in the field of resource and energy, as well as her significant contributions to the theory and practice of the "Two-Oriented Society" (resource-saving and environmentally friendly society) and ecological civilization.
