HUTB Rounds off 26th English Speech Competition for College Students

On the afternoon of June 28, the School of Foreign Languages rounded off HUTB’s 26thEnglish Speech Competition for College Students which was held online. The six teachers, namely, Associate Professor Shi Bo, Deputy Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Professor Wen Lanfang and Associate Professor Zhu Lihua from the Department of English Language and Literature, Lecturer Wang Jing from the Public Foreign Language Teaching and Research Office, Lecturer Mo Jiaojiao and Lecturer Zhou Ling from the Department of Business English, served as judges of the competition which attracted 31 outstanding contestants from all schools.

The contents of the competition contained two parts. In the first part, each contestant was required to give a three-minute speech with the given topic of “Chinese Dream”; in the second part, basing on speech contents, the judges raised questions to contestants and tested their abilities to deliver impromptu expressions in English. During the competition, the contestants demonstrated their excellent oral English abilities. Around the theme of “Chinese Dream”, these contestants sincerely expressed their love for the motherland and their great ideals of serving the motherland and realizing the Chinese dream.

The fierce competition lasted three hours. Eventually, Yue Xiaohui and Zhou Pan won the first prizes in the professional group, and Li Yalan, Pan Wenjin, and Cai Xin won the first prizes in the non-professional group; Peng Hui and Zhang Qing won the second prizes in the professional group, and Ou Yucan, Zhu Sulian, Liu Qi, and Xie Zhuo won the second prizes in the non-professional group; Wang Zining and Liu Yuqing won the third prizes in the professional group, and Yang Xiaoqian, Wu Dannuo, Zhou Lihui, Zhou Jun, and Liu Pengwen won the third prizes in the non-professional group.

By organically integrating language skills with ideological and political elements, this competition expanded the educating connotation of foreign language teaching and deeply cultivated students' patriotism, character and civic virtue.
