Professor Wang Yin of Sichuan International Studies University Came to HNUC to Give Lectures

From November 26 to 27, Professor Wang Yin, doctoral supervisor of Sichuan International Studies University, and famous linguist, was invited to HNUC to give lectures. On the evening of November 26, professor Wang made an academic report entitled “Cognitive methods of Learning English Vocabularies” in the Yingcai reporting hall of HNUC’s library. Teachers and students of School of Foreign Language attended and listened to the report.

Professor Wang analyzed and explained how to master English vocabularies better with vivid language and distinct examples from the following aspects: the definition of language, linguistics, new understanding on language with post-modernity and CL, basic analysis of English vocabularies, cognitive learning of English vocabularies, and embodied-cognitive linguistics. He pointed out that our students, who studied language, were at the forefront of the times, and undertook the important responsibility of the age.

The lecture was rich and colorful with professor Wang’s vivid and humorous as well as philosophic descriptions. Through this face-to-face contact with linguistic expert, students appreciated not only the wisdom and elegance of “great master”, but also the authentic beauty of English vocabularies, indicating directions to their future studies.

On the afternoon of November 27, Professor Wang gave a lecture entitled “Embodied-Cognitive Linguistics: theory and practice” to all foreign language teachers in meeting room 401 of the second office building in HNUC.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Wang talked about why should we study linguistics and how to study linguistics, and collated and summarized the development stages of linguistics from traditional philology to cognitive linguistics in a logical and systematic way. Further, he introduced the embodied-cognitive linguistics, and finally elucidated in detail the particular practice of embodied-cognitive linguistics in English vocabulary teaching. During this over two hours’ lecture, all present teachers benefit a lot from professor Wang’s professional quality and emotions to linguistics. (Yin Bochun)
