[Hunan Daily] For His Students, He Works Whole-heartedly

"Chen Wang, how is everything going?" Chen Wang heard the familiar greeting of her teacher Yan Jianjun again in the student dorm of Economy and Trade School on October 19.

The girl sitting on the bed is called Chen Wang who was led to paralysis of the lower limbs by an accident when she was ten and had been sent to go to school in a wheelchair ever since. Last year she was admitted to Hunan University of Commerce and her 34 classmates took turns to escort her to classes. In the same year, the story was reported in the media focus. Chen Wang and her class became an inspirational example for other students in Hunan Province.

One year later, I once again visited Chen Wang and found the ones Chen Wang would like to thank most were the school teachers who gave her meticulous care. Yan Jianjun is one of them.

Yan Jianjun is deputy secretary of the general Party branch in Economy and Trade School, Hunan University of Commerce. As a young backbone teacher tutoring postgraduates and responsible for students’ affairs, he repeatedly fed back Chen Wang and his parents’ needs to the school in a timely manner. With efforts of the school, a special room with barrier-free path at the door was prepared for her wheelchair to go through.

"After the media attention ends, I did not feel lost as Mr. Yan still comes to visit me on a weekly basis wand make sure that everything goes well with me, which gives me a lot of encouragement, and I am particularly moved."  Chen Wang said.

After we said goodbye to Chen Wang, we know more stories about Yan Jianjun from other students. No matter how busy, he always insists on his roll call to students every Sunday evening  "because they need good study and living habits", according to Yan’s remarks. Once he finds students in low spirit, he will try every possible way to cheer them up. Once, there was a poor student from the mountain area called Zhangjiajie who wore only one piece of clothing in winter. In order to protect students' self-esteem, he bought a jacket, and gave him in the car. Every vacation, he would introduce the student with part-time jobs to provide him both financial support and opportunities to learn more. Eventually, the student came out of the inferiority, and actively participated in various school activities. After graduation, he found a good job.

"I'm trying to return to the essence of university education." In Yan’s opinion, if university graduates should have lofty ideals and correct values, the basic thing for them to do is to learn to be a good person full of positive energy. This requires teachers to treat every student whole-heartedly.

Students felt his whole-heartedness. Knowing that he was about to go to the U.S. for one-year exchange study, Chen Wang sent a message in particular saying "Mr. Yan, thank you for your whole-hearted care for me  for no return. I wish all is well with you. Looking forward to your return  and sharing with us your experiences. "(Huang Yao)
