HUTB Holds the Hunan Provincial Quarterfinal of the 11th All China Interpreting Contest

Recently, the Hunan Provincial Quarterfinal of the 11th All China Interpreting Contest was organized by the Translators Association of China (TAC) in HUTB. The competition was guided by the China International Communications Group (CICG), organized by the TAC, and co-organized by HUTB, the Hunan Provincial Branch of the TAC LSCAT Center and Hunan Jiuyi Education Technology Co., Ltd.
Zhang Ling, Vice President of HUTB, Qiu Aihua, Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Hunan Province, and Yang Yueping, Director of the Hunan Provincial Branch of the TAC LSCAT Center, attended the opening ceremony. Zhang addressed the opening ceremony on behalf of HUTB. English major professors from Central South University, Hunan University, Hunan Normal University, Xiangtan University, HUTB, Changsha University of Science and Technology, Central South University of Forestry and Technology, Hunan Agricultural University and Changsha University served as the judges. The opening ceremony was chaired by Wen Lanfang, Executive Dean of the School of Foreign Languages.
The competition includes two categories, i.e. E-C translation and C-E translation. The competition questions involve topics such as COVID-19, food security and metaverse, and are designed to comprehensively assess the contestants’ language skills, understanding, memory, shorthand noting, information conversion and processing, adaptability and psychological quality. 304 contestants from 34 colleges in Hunan Province participated in the competition. After online selection and college referral, 91 contestants entered the Hunan Provincial Quarterfinal. The quarterfinal was divided into two rounds. In the first round, 91 contestants were divided into two groups, and 5 judges scored each group. After a contestant’ recording was played, the judges scored instantly. The top 10 contestants of each group entered the second round. After listening to the recording, 10 judges scored and ranked the contestants. After fierce competition, Luo Junjie and Li Yuan, students from HUTB, won the first prize and the second prize in the quarterfinal, respectively.
All China Interpreting Contest is the most influential high-level translation contest in China. It aims to serve the “Belt and Road” and external discourse system and improve the international communication, promote the construction of the translation discipline and the development of the language service industry, and cultivate international high-quality language service talents.
