[Lushan Lecture] Professor Cai Jigang of Fudan University Gives A Lecture at HUTB

On the afternoon of April 2, Professor Cai Jigang of College of Foreign Languages and Literature, Fudan University, upon invitation, delivered the 107thLushan Lecture at HUTB, with the themeof “Training of Capacities to Read Research Papers in and Write Papers forInternational Journals: Significance and Method”. The lecture was held at the lecture hall of F201, Lezhi Building, hosted by Mr. Liu Xingyun, Deputy Director of Scientific Research Administration Division, and attended by faculty, graduate and undergraduate representatives.
Under the theme of “Training of Capacities to Read Research Papers in and Write Papers forInternational Journals: Significance and Method”, Professor Cai Jigang elaborated why Chinese college students must learn how to reach international journals, and emphasized the need to train five capacities in paper writing: First, the capacity to obtain and analyze information. Chinese students should read more papers in international journals, and obtain and analyze information through multiple channels so as to obtain a more reliable conclusion. Second, the capacity to discover a problem. Chinese students should read a sufficient amount of literature, and discover a valuable problem through rigorous thinking. Third, capacity to design a solution. A correct method is key to solving the problem. Chinese students should learn how to use a rigorous and science-based method. Fourth, capacity to analyze and explain a phenomenon. Explaining a problem is as important as discovering a problem. College students should analyze and explain a problem from multiple perspectives, and find theoretical support by reading literature. Fifth, capacity to comply with academic standard and ethics. College students must indicate the reference when quoting another author’s opinions. Reference must be reasonable and in line with the standard. Professor Cai stressed that college students should observe academic ethics, be rigorous and pay attention to experiment and investigation while conducting a scientific research. Citing his latest paper as a case, he explained the method of reading papers in and writing papers forinternational journals.

Cai Jigang is a professor and doctoral supervisor of College of Foreign Languages and Literature, Fudan University, and serves as President of Chinese Association for English for Specific Purposes Committee, Executive Vice President of Asian Association for English for Specific Purposes, President of China English for Academic Purposes Association(CEAPA)and Director of College English Teaching Steering Committee for Universities in Shanghai. He presided over 2 projects under the National Social Science Fund of China and 1 key project funded by the State Language Committee. Professor Cai published more than 100 CSSCI papers in state-level foreign language journals, and more than 30 articles in Guang Ming Daily, Chinese Social Sciences Todayand China Science Daily. He also published 5 monographs and 38 textbooks. According to the statistics of highly cited authors in Chinese journals released by Wanfang Data, Professor Cai Jigang ranked No.1 of “Foreign Language Discipline” for three consecutive years from 2008 to 2010, and ranked No.2 in the list of most influential scholars of “Foreign Language Discipline” in 2017 and 2018.
