HUTB Holds Training Launching Ceremony for 2020 National College Student Mathematics Competition

On the morning of July 20, HUTB held the training launch ceremony for the 2020 National College Student Mathematics Competition at the Yingcai Lecture Hall in the library. This ceremony was attended by Vice President Liu Guoquan and leaders of the School of Mathematics & Statistics, the Student Affairs Division and the Security Division, as well as all the instructors and contestants. This ceremony was presided over by Xie Xiaoliang, Dean of the School of Mathematics & Statistics.

At the ceremony, Dr. Zhang Jian, Secretary-General of HUTB Mathematics Competition Organizing Committee, introduced to the contestants and instructors the preliminary preparations and training arrangements for the national college student mathematics competition. Professor Chen Jianwen, an instructor representative, started with The Beauty of Mathematicsto talk about the mathematical thinking contained in such modern technologies as artificial intelligence, language recognition, and Internet search. He also shared how to use mathematics to solve engineering problems and how to keep thinking out of the box for innovation. Finally, he hoped that the contestants can learn from the mathematics competition. Zhang Zhilan, a student representative from Class 1801 of Digital Economy shared her experience and feelings about participating in last year's college student mathematics competition and offered suggestions to this year's contestants.
Dean Xie Xiaoliang made overall arrangements for the summer training designed for the college student mathematics competition. He held that by participating in mathematics competitions, college students can develop the interest in learning mathematics, cultivate the abilities of mathematical thinking and problem analyzing and solving, and exercise the courage and will to overcome difficulties. Mathematics competitions provide a stage for young students to display their basic knowledge and thinking ability in mathematics. Such competitions can help universities discover and select innovative mathematics talents and plays a very important role in students' application for graduate programs and pursuit of further development. He hoped that the trainees can cherish the summer vacation time to practice professional skills hard. He also reminded the trainees of abiding by school discipline and rules and paying attention to personal safety.
At last, Vice President Liu Guoquan made a concluding speech. He highly recognized HUTB’s excellent results achieved in the past national college student mathematics competitions and relevant hard work the instructors made. He hoped that the participation in such competitions can help students cultivate strong wills to overcome difficulties and to innovatively forge ahead towards excellence. He noted that HUTB will intensify the support for mathematics competitions. HUTB will incorporate discipline competitions into the year-end assessment of undergraduate education, increase fund input for discipline competitions, and establish a long-term construction mechanism, striving to make discipline competitions an important engine for its talent training mode reform.
