[Integrated Development of Culture and Technology] Academician Chen Xiaohong, Secretary, Gives Special Lecture on "Situation and Policy"

On the afternoon of May 7, the special lecture on "Situation and Policy" of HUTB 2024 Integrated Development of Culture and Technology Themed Education Season was held at the Xiangjiang Lecture Hall of the Xiangjiang Building. Chen Xiaohong, Secretary of the CPC HUTB Committee, Director of Xiangjiang Laboratory, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), served as the keynote speaker. More than 1,500 people attended the lecture, including Liu Guoquan, Member of the CPC HUTB Committee and Vice President, Zhang Ling, Vice President, Gan Dejian, Member of the CPC HUTB Committee and Vice President, Yi Mianyang, Deputy Secretary of the CPC HUTB Committee, as well as heads of relevant functional departments and representatives of teachers and students. The lecture was chaired by Vice President Liu Guoquan.

The lecture was conducted in the form of "main venue + sub-venues". The live broadcast sub-venues were set up in the Yingcai Lecture Hall of the South Campus Library, Classroom C206 of the Rixin Building, the Lecture Hall of the North Campus Library, and the Lecture Hall of the Zhuiguang Building.

Academician Chen Xiaohong delivered a fascinating special lecture on the theme of "'Artificial Intelligence+' Empowering New Quality Productive Forces and Industrial Innovation and Development". She expounded on four aspects, namely the situation and challenges of technological innovation in the digital economy era, the development and frontier trends of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the practice of AI empowering industrial innovation and development, and the creation of a highland for the integration of culture and technology. This lecture on "Situation and Policy" brought an excellent learning experience to the faculty and students.
Academician Chen Xiaohong provided a profound analysis of the situation and challenges of technological innovation in the digital economy era. She pointed out that the digital economy has become a key force in reshaping the global competitive landscape, intensifying technological competition, and causing significant changes in industrial competition patterns. Moreover, the global industry chain and supply chain systems face security challenges. In front of the new circumstances and challenges, we must adapt to local conditions to develop new quality productive forces, promote industrial innovation and development, and enhance the resilience and security levels of industry chains and supply chains.
According to Academician Chen Xiaohong, the continuous emergence of new business formats and models is driving the constant transformation of traditional professions and the educational landscape in the era of digital intelligence will also undergo significant changes. In terms of the paradigm for talent cultivation, it involves transitioning from traditional thinking patterns to digital intelligence thinking, from disciplinary specialization to interdisciplinary approaches, from a focus on theoretical research to a focus on innovative practices, from traditional evaluation criteria to comprehensive evaluation standards, and from existing models to profound integration of science and humanities and arts.

When elucidating the development and frontier trends of AI technology, Academician Chen Xiaohong pointed out that AI has entered the era of big data, large models, and high computing power. AI technology has become the core engine driving the development of the digital economy and advanced computing is helping to build a new future for AI. She introduced cutting-edge technologies such as computing-network integration, quantum computing, brain-inspired intelligence, embodied AI, etc. She pointed out that the next generation of AI will promote the transition from artificial narrow intelligence to artificial general intelligence through integrated innovation such as large models, trustworthy AI, explainable AI, programmable AI, and brain-machine integration. This will empower the innovation and development of new quality productive forces.
To develop new quality productive forces, technological innovations should be applied to specific industries and industry chains. Academician Chen Xiaohong introduced the construction of high energy-level scientific research and innovation platforms such as the Xiangjiang Laboratory, the National Center for Basic Science, the State Key Laboratory of Information Intelligence and Smart Society (incubation), and the Social Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence. She showcased the industrial innovation practices in smart society, resource, energy and environment, intelligent manufacturing, metaverse digital industry, intelligent healthcare, and biological intelligent manufacturing conducted by the university's research team with the support of these high energy-level research platforms, including the Xiangjiang Laboratory and the National Center for Basic Science. She pointed out that high energy-level scientific and technological innovation platforms support industrial innovation and development, technology innovation leads industrial development practices, and AI empowers industries to enhance quality and efficiency.

Academician Chen Xiaohong emphasized that building a highland for the integrated development of culture and technology requires highlighting the characteristics of integrated development and promoting the rise of humanities and the prosperity of science and technology. She stressed the need to excel in the integration of culture and technology and make significant achievements in this field. In recent years, the university has continuously optimized the layout of schools and disciplines and actively explored cross-integration talent training models to promote deep integration of culture and technology. The university has made new breakthroughs and achievements in comprehensive disciplinary strength, education and teaching, talent training quality, scientific research and innovation, faculty construction, external exchange and cooperation, and campus construction and management. Undergraduates are welcome to continue studying and pursuing advanced studies at the university. She hoped that everyone could maintain enthusiasm, uphold integrity, pursue excellence, root down, and grow upwards.
