[China Science Daily] First Batch of 19 Academician Expert Teams Settle in Xiangjiang Laboratory

On July 10, the Xiangjiang Laboratory Unveiling Ceremony was held in the Beidou Industrial Park of the Changsha National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone. Xiangjiang Laboratory was constructed based on “1346” as the overall framework, and “headquarter + branch + innovation center” as the layout, that is, building one laboratory headquarter and three centers, namely, for computing power, algorithm and computing basis, focusing on four research directions, namely, data intelligence, artificial intelligence for high-performance computing, new intelligent computing and domain-oriented key generic technologies, and carrying out deep applications in six areas, i.e. intelligent manufacturing, smart medical care, smart resources, energy and environment, smart transportation and logistics, scientific supervision and social governance, and digital media, to build a leading area of demonstration.
In particular, the headquarter consists of major basic research, technological innovation and achievement transformation departments. The branches are established in 7 colleges, including the National University of Defense Technology, the Central South University, Hunan University, HUTB, Hunan Normal University and Changsha University of Science and Technology, to set up research bases for key generic technologies. The innovation centers are established in 24 enterprises, such as Huawei, Baidu, Hunan Valin Iron & Steel Group Co., Ltd., CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd., Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science and Technology Co., Ltd., Sany Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., Sunward Intelligent Equipment Co., Ltd., China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation Limited, Jingjia Micro, Talkweb Information System Co., Ltd., and the 48th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, to set up scientific innovation centers and achievement transformation centers.
Xiangjiang Laboratory is a major innovation platform to strengthen the computing power support of Hunan. Focusing on the areas of advanced computing and artificial intelligence and relying on the talent chain, innovation chain and industry chain strengths of Hunan, the laboratory will carry out cooperation with National University of Defense Technology, the Central South University, Hunan University, HUTB and Xiangtan University, among others, and integrate scientific and technological innovation resources inside and outside China to achieve its commitment to becoming a national original theory research center for advanced computing and artificial intelligence, a national critical technology innovation highland for advanced computing and artificial intelligence, and a national industry empowering base for advanced computing and artificial intelligence. The laboratory will also put effort into addressing a batch of strategic, forward-looking and basic major scientific problems and critical core technologies, and carry out the application demonstration, so as to promote the high-quality development of industrial clusters such as advanced computing, smart society, intelligent manufacturing, and software and information technology services in Hunan.
With the continuous development of digital economy in recent years, computing power has become a new focal point in the global strategic competition. Hunan enjoys outstanding advantages in the areas of advanced computing and artificial intelligence, attracts a group of high-level innovation teams and high-level innovative talents, and has innovation platforms such as the State Key Laboratory of High-performance Computing, the National Supercomputing Center in Changsha, the National Center for Basic Science and the National Center for Applied Mathematics in Hunan. It has developed the world-leading Tianhe supercomputers, and established a “Two Cores, One Ecosystem” computing system with Phytium, Kunpeng CPU, Jingjia Micro GPU and Kylin operating system as the core.

Hunan is accelerating the construction of a provincial laboratory system led by four major laboratories (namely, Yuelushan Laboratory, Yuelushan Industrial Innovation Center, Xiangjiang Laboratory and Furong Laboratory) and characterized by reasonable field layout, clear positioning level and obvious distinctive advantages. In the next step, Hunan will further speed up the construction of high energy level innovation platforms, optimize and improve the laboratory system and mechanism, strengthen talent cultivation and introduction with high-efficiency and high-quality services, and support Xiangjiang Laboratory to become a domestically leading and internationally first-class laboratory for advanced computing and artificial intelligence.
Chen Xiaohong said that Xiangjiang Laboratory will further integrate the excellent science and technology strengths and innovative resources in Hunan Province and inside and outside China. She added that after 8-10 years of construction and development, it will gradually achieve the “Seven Ones” construction objective: formulate a set of original scientific theories, explore a group of breakthrough technology methods, build a state-level innovation highland, establish a batch of emerging inter-disciplinary subjects, set up a team of world-class talents, establish a set of innovative research management systems, and create a batch of one hundred billion-class industrial clusters.
At the ceremony, the organizer presented a letter of appointment to the director of the laboratory and the director of the academic committee, and presented a plate to the laboratory co-construction units. Lu Xicheng, CAE Academician and Director of the Academic Committee of Xiangjiang Laboratory, and other 25 CAE and CAS Academicians attended the ceremony.
