2023-04-26
The total number of borrowed paper books in the library for the year was 622 copies. Shu Zhou, a student from the Chinese Language and Literature major of the 2020 cohort at HUTB, ranked first in the 2022 Hunan Province Postgraduate Reading Star competition with this borrowing record, surpassing the second-place candidate by 194 books.
"I am currently in my third year of graduate studies, and I have more free time. Due to my major and personal interests, I spend over 10 hours a day reading books". Shu Zhou says that reading has been a habit developed since childhood and has already become an important part of life and learning.
Shu Zhou's family also has a great love for reading, and they have many books at home. Since the age of 5, Shu Zhou has enjoyed flipping through the books on her parents’ bookshelf. Although some of them were not fully understood, Shu Zhou would always go through them from beginning to end. After starting elementary school, Shu Zhou would visit the nearby Xinhua Bookstore for an hour every day after school to read books. By the age of 10, Shu Zhou had already read many books, and the books she read had more depth. She said, "I enjoy continuously reading more challenging books, as it inspires me to keep learning and exploring".
Extensive reading has greatly benefited Shu Zhou in her academic studies. She said, "I am studying Chinese Language and Literature, and my research requires reading a large number of literary works, theoretical books, and academic papers". Shu Zhou mentioned that the more books she reads, the more confident she feels in her studies, and it also broadens her perspectives in research.
"Life is limited, but through books, I can experience limitless knowledge and endless possibilities". Shu Zhou believes that reading allows for a "conversation" with great writers and their works from different time periods, enabling an understanding of how they perceive the world. "Engaging in long hours of reading is also a process of enjoying solitude, which helps me to reflect and grow better in this noisy world," Shu Zhou said.
