Experts and Scholars Gather in Changsha to Discuss Cutting-edge Issues in Management Science and Engineering

    On September 24, the First Session of the Fourth Council Meeting of the Society of Management Science and Engineering of China, hosted by the Society of Management Science and Engineering of China and organized by National University of Defense Technology, Central South University, and HUTB, was held in Changsha. Experts and scholars gathered to discuss cutting-edge issues in management science and engineering. Gao Ziyou, Chairman of the Society of Management Science and Engineering of China and a professor at the School of Systems Science at Beijing Jiaotong University, Chen Xiaohong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Secretary of CPC HUTB Committee and Director of Xiangjiang Laboratory, and over 600 experts and scholars from Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, the University of Hong Kong, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, National University of Defense Technology, Central South University, and HUTB participated in the conference. The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Liu Zhong, Vice Chairman of the Society and a professor at the National University of Defense Technology.

    At the opening ceremony, Academician Chen Xiaohong delivered a welcoming speech. She expressed that in the context of the new era, the Society of Management Science and Engineering of China focuses on forward-thinking, comprehensive planning, strategic deployment, and holistic advancement. The society is committed to promoting cutting-edge academic research and innovative development, creating a platform for discipline construction, talent cultivation, scientific research, and management innovation. This platform ensures solid support for elevating the level of discipline development, original innovation capabilities, and international influence. It also injects continuous energy into China's high-quality economic, social, and technological development and contributes Chinese management innovation wisdom and strength to drive forward China's unique modernization.

    Academician Chen Xiaohong pointed out that this conference will facilitate the further cohesion of the Society of Management Science and Engineering of China and accelerate progress in the fields of data intelligence and the smart society. She sincerely hopes that all the distinguished guests in attendance can express their thoughts freely, exchange ideas, explore innovative frontiers, and share visionary insights. This collective effort will generate greater momentum for the development of the management science and engineering discipline, the enhancement of scientific research, the transformation of academic achievements into practical applications, and the cultivation of high-quality innovative talents, thereby contributing more wisdom and knowledge to the field.

    In his speech, Chairman Gao Ziyu expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the society to the experts and scholars attending the conference. He extended sincere thanks to Central South University, National University of Defense Technology, and especially HUTB, which was responsible for organizing and hosting the conference, for their services and meticulous organizational arrangements that contributed to the smooth convening of the event. Chairman Gao stated that this conference was not only a specific working meeting but also a grand academic exchange event for outstanding young scholars in various subcommittees. He genuinely hoped that this new conference format could guide, support, and nurture the growth of outstanding young talents in the field of management science and engineering. He emphasized the importance of the society's role in cultivating outstanding youth and promoting their development, fostering academic exchanges among young scholars, advancing the discipline, and upholding the society's culture of innovation.

The high-level academic forum was conducted in two phases, each hosted by Professor Hu Xiangpei, Vice Chairman of the Society and a professor at Dalian University of Technology, and Professor Kou Gang, Director of the Research Institute of Big Data at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics.

    In the first phase, Academician Chen Xiaohong, Professor Liang Liang, and Professor Hong Yongmiao were invited to give keynote presentations.

    Academician Chen Xiaohong, in her presentation titled "Innovation and Application of Resource and Environmental Management Research in the Era of Digital Economy," pointed out that there are significant management bottlenecks and challenges in the field of resource and environmental management in China, which need to be addressed in response to the major national requirements of the digital economy era. She proposed a research approach focusing on "three major national strategic demands, four key scientific issues, and the formation and support of three major innovative output systems," and outlined the research efforts to address these challenges, encompassing theoretical methods, key technologies, platform tools, and demonstration projects to provide innovative solutions. She also discussed the progress in the development of high-level scientific and technological innovation platforms such as the National Center for Basic Science project, national key laboratories, and Xiangjiang Laboratory, highlighting the achievements made in different stages. She expressed her commitment to showcasing new accomplishments and responsibilities in promoting the green, high-quality development of the economy and constructing new competitive advantages.

    Professor Liang Liang, former President of Hefei University of Technology, delivered a presentation titled "Empirical Research and Human-Machine Interaction of ChatGPT." In his talk, he discussed three key aspects of ChatGPT's capabilities in empirical research for the digital economy: the ability of ChatGPT to conduct empirical research in the digital economy; ChatGPT's capacity for reproducing classical research in organizational behavior studies; empirical research on the effectiveness of ChatGPT interaction in the medical field. Professor Liang provided insights into the advantages and limitations of applying ChatGPT in academic research and healthcare through in-depth experimental analyses. His presentation expanded the horizons for young scholars, offering valuable references and insights into research approaches and methods for further exploring ChatGPT applications.

    Professor Hong Yongmiao, Dean of the School of Economics and Management at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave a presentation titled "Forecasting Inflation Rates: A Large Panel of Micro-Level Data Approach." In his presentation, he discussed how their team innovatively utilized a vast amount of micro-level panel data and combined it with machine learning algorithms to successfully forecast macro-level inflation rates. He emphasized the importance of integrating economic foundational theory with data algorithm tools to achieve genuine breakthroughs in research.

    In the second stage of the forum, Professor Lv Xin from the National University of Defense Technology delivered a presentation titled "Mobile Computing and Social Governance." He focused on four main areas: mobile computing fundamentals, spatiotemporal pattern mining, emergency response decision-making, and smart social governance.

    Professor Xiao Yongbo from Tsinghua University delivered a presentation titled "ESG and Operations Management." He discussed the rise of ESG, the operational perspective, key research areas, and noteworthy research directions.

    Both experts shared their research ideas and achievements, providing young scholars with new concepts, approaches, and methodologies for their research explorations.

    Following these presentations, a council meeting was held to discuss and arrange the society's relevant work.

On the afternoon of the 24th, two sub-forums, the "Data Intelligence and Smart Society Forum" and the "Young Scholars Forum," were held in Xiangjiang Building at HUTB. Academician Chen Xiaohong and Chairman Gao Ziyou delivered speeches for the "Data Intelligence and Smart Society Forum."

    Academician Chen Xiaohong stated that the concept of a smart society is rich in content and covers a wide range of areas, including social economy, daily life, and social governance. She hopes that by combining top-level design, they can address bottleneck issues in fields such as public health, smart healthcare, smart resource management, intelligent manufacturing, and smart transportation. Their goal is to achieve theoretical innovation, practical application, and the cultivation of high-level talents. This expansion demonstrates the Society of Management Science and Engineering China's commitment to extending its influence, fostering contributions, and enhancing practical applications through the intersection and integration with data intelligence.

    Chairman Gao Ziyuan expressed that the current convergence of new technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence across various industries is becoming a significant development direction. To fully leverage the leading role of the Society of Management Science and Engineering of China, and with the strong support of numerous scholars, they have established the Data Intelligence and Smart Society Division. This endeavor holds great theoretical significance and practical value in advancing interdisciplinary integration.

    The Data Intelligence and Smart Society Forum featured two phases, with Professor Tan Yuejin from the National University of Defense Technology and Professor Zhang Ziqiong from Harbin Institute of Technology serving as moderators. Professor Tan Yuejin introduced the basic information about the Society of Management Science and Engineering of China and the Data Intelligence and Smart Society Division.

    In the first phase, Professor Shen Zuojun, Vice President of the University of Hong Kong, delivered a presentation titled "The Application of Data-Driven Decision Analysis in Operations Management." Professor Bai Changhong from Nankai University delivered a report titled "Back to Creation: Research on Happy Enterprises and Happy Urban and Rural Areas." Professor Huang Lihua from Fudan University delivered a presentation titled "Viewing Data Elements and Relevant Issues from a Circulation Perspective." Professor Liu Zhong from the National University of Defense Technology presented a reported titled "Reflections and Explorations on Intelligent Planning and Management Decision-Making in Large-Scale Complex Scenarios".

In the second phase, Professor Xiong Xiong from Tianjin University delivered a presentation titled "Analysis of the Characteristics of the Chinese Financial System." Professor Jiang Zhongzhong from Northeastern University presented a report titled "Content Sharing When Customers Can Multihome." Professor Hu Chunhua from HUTB delivered a report titled "Technological Innovation in Smart Social Governance for Data-Intelligence Application."

    The Young Scholars Forum was held in two phases, with the first phase being moderated by Professor Yan Zhijun from Beijing Institute of Technology and the second phase by Professor Wang Zongrun from Central South University.

    In the first phase, Professor Li Kunpeng from Capital University of Economics and Business presented a reported titlted "Robust Dimensionality Reduction Methods." Associate Professor Peng Yijie from Peking University presented a report titled "Supply Chain Inventory Management Based on Deep Reinforcement Learning." Professor Zhang Ziqiong from Harbin Institute of Technology delivered a presentation titled "Smart Users:  Effort Management in Earning Rewards." Professor Liu Yu from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China presented a report titled "Equipment Cluster Maintenance Decision Making under Resource Constraints." Professor Guo Renyong from Beihang University presented a report titled "Modeling and Analysis of the Early Commute Problem." Professor Zhou Weihua from Zhejiang University presented a report titled "Taylor Approximation of Inventory Policies for One-Warehouse, Multi-Retailer Systems with Demand Feature." Professor Wang Jingyuan from Beihang University delivered a report titled "Urban Big Models and Urban Data Intelligence." Professor Zhou Cheng from Huazhong University of Science and Technology presented a report titled "Proactive Management of Subway Engineering Safety Based on Digital Twins."

    In the second phase, Professor Fang Kai from Zhejiang University delivered a report titled "Examining Urban Carbon Management Mechanisms from the Perspective of Carbon Neutrality." Professor Wang Yangjie from Central South University delivered a presentation titled "Digital Empowerment, Technological Innovation, and Air Pollution Control." Associate Professor Yu Jiayi from Fudan University presented a report titled "Preparedness with a System Integrating Inventory, Capacity, and Capability for Future Pandemics and Other Disasters." Associate Professor Chen Jiayu from Tsinghua University delivered a report titled "Neuro-Management in Construction Engineering: Development and Prospects." Professor Pei Jun from Hefei University of Technology presented a report titled "Innovative Operation of High-End Equipment Manufacturing Enterprises Based on IIOT Platform." Researcher Yuan Quan from Zhejiang University presented a report titled "Dynamic Pricing Strategies for Consumer Arrival as a Self-Exciting Point Process." Professor Zhao Xian from Beijing Institute of Technology delivered a report titled "Balancing Component Reassignment and Preventive Maintenance Joint Strategy."Professor Chen Xiqun from Zhejiang University presented a report titled "Future Reductions of China’s Transport Emissions Impacted by Changing Driving Behavior." Associate Professor Liu Fang from the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences presented a report titled "Shall We Only Store Popular Products? Warehouse Assortment Selection for E-Companies." Associate Professor Peng Zhanglin from Hefei University of Technology delivered a report titled "Construction of a Digital Procurement Platform for the Entire Industrial Chain of Dynamic Batteries."
